Hamerton Zoo Park Hamerton Zoo News 2024

Hi everyone, I have a list of rare species that are housed at this zoo, and I would like some advice from you. Where in the zoo are they housed? Are they easily visible? What time of year do you recommend I visit? Do you recommend a specific time to see any of these species? This is the list:

- Carter's rock gecko (Pristurus carteri)
- Barbary partridge (Alectoris barbara)
- Tasmanian brushtail possum (Trichosurus vulpecula fuliginosus)
- Squirrel glider (Petaurus norfolcensis)
- Spinifex hopping mouse (Notomys alexis)
- Ringtail (Bassariscus astutus)
- Red bush squirrel (Paraxerus palliatus)
- Philby's partridge (Alectoris philbyi)
- Kerr`s Long-nosed potoroo (Potorous tridactylus tridactylus)
- Eastern Ring-tailed possum (Pseudocheirus peregrinus)
- Common brushtail possum (Trichosurus vulpecula vulpecula)
- Barking owl (Ninox connivens)
- Eastern lesser white-nosed monkey (Cercopithecus petaurista petaurista)

Thank you a lot!

As far as I understand, the bush squirrels are off show. I'm not 100% sure on some of the birds, or the current sugar glider location ("4?"), but I hope this helps. Nerds, please let me know if I've made any errors.

Excellent map!

I would add that the rock gecko wasn't in the tropical house area when I was there end October so not sure where that one is and I can't recall seeing the Philby's Partridge at all.

The squirrel gliders have moved about from next to the white stork area, to next to the red handed tamarins and back but in the same general area.

In terms of visibility, the challenge will probably be all the Possums though they now have viewing into their nest spaces in the case of the Tasmanian's etc so you can see them having a nap! Feeding time and just after opening / just before closing are the times I've had luck with them but they have been mostly miss for me. I've had the best result with the Ringtail (and skunk it shares with) just before closing / at later feeding time.

The Guenon, Potoroo, Barking owls (two aviaries with those in, the other in the block behind the main aviary at the front), Hopping mice and Barbary Partridge have all been showy in my experience.

Thank you for your help! I do wonder if some of these birds and the gecko might be off show, as with the squirrel.

No worries! End October these were in the Tropical area after it's recent refurb.

  • Anthill Python (who are amazing but that's an aside!)
  • Black Tree monitor
  • Giant African Millipede
  • Banded Gila monster
  • Blue Spiny Lizard
  • Gidgee Skink
  • Pygmy Mulga monitor
  • Rio Fuerte Beaded Lizard
Former enclosure for Mangrove snake, unsigned.

Good day out at Hamerton today. Quite a few people around and a bit cold and damp but lots to see.

Enjoyed seeing the young Meerkats and the recent arrivals for the Parma Wallabies.

The Cheetah cubs who are being hand reared were quite a treat. The viewing into the former Anteater house being used as the creche made for some exceptionally close views, with the cubs standing on the sill next to the window and playing about right next to the glass. I've never seen Cheetah cubs at such close range (Hamerton has offered good views of cubs recently of course but not a literal hands width away) and it was quite something to see them near to like that. There are Pudu in the outside area so the zoo is making the most of the space.

Really enjoyed the birds who were added recently, with the Thrushes and the Mynahs particularly showy. Missed a couple of them but better weather will no doubt bring them out. The Red Billed Blue Magpies that used to be housed next to the owls have given up their space to the Robin Chat and Red Winged Starling and are now behind the enclosure containing the Monal Pheasant and Kookaburra.

There were 10 wild herons in the White Stork enclosure (a mix of adults and juveniles) trying to steal the Storks' lunch of chicks in a bucket. Not seen that many herons all together before and it was interesting to see their interactions and behaviour. The Red Kites were also active stealing the chicks so there was quite a wildlife fix going on.

Lots of building work in progress particularly the changes to the shop / cafe area.
