Third visit of the year to Hamerton today and a fun day with pretty good weather and not too crowded.
The new macaque enclosure looks like it will be an impressive space when complete, pano taken from the bear platform, facing out towards the tigers.
There was a new aviary (to me) in the top corner of the aviary area, with Barking Owl and Tawny Frogmouth in residence.
A few other changes since my last trip
- The new entrance and exit had opened and looks smart (caused me a bit of confusion entry gate wise!)
- The Eurasian jay was not signed in the enclosure near the civets and a Kookaburra was signed there instead
- There was a second Lilac Roller, sharing with the Magpies and Turaco, next to the Roller aviary. There seemed to be much excitement from the original bird and the first time I have seen two there (might just be me)
- Red Handed Tamarin were in the enclosure next to the marmoset. Pied Tamarin were no longer signed in the enclosure near the Outback Aviary. I assume they may have left the collection / be offshow. Two Ring Tailed lemur enclosures now both share with the Hyrax vs the three that were there before (the one near the Outback Aviary is empty)
- There were Southern Aardwolves signed in the formed Anteater space as well as at least four in the enclosure next to the bat eared foxes
- The possum enclosure in the Outback Aviary was empty but there were brush tailed possums signed outside the exit next to the golden ones.
- There was a Pudu in the enclosure in front of the wattled crane as well as those in the area with the tortoises
- The enclosures on the far side of the zoo opposite the bears look all completed as does the new nature pond
Got great views of a number of Aardwolves inside and outside and the Bat eared foxes and most of the the birds. Was nice to see the new Hornbill but a shame to see one of the Red Siskin has lost a foot since I was last there, but they were getting about ok. The three young cheetahs were super active in the front enclosure and the Corsacs were the usual treat. The young donkey was cute. One of the bears was outside in the enclosure enjoying a nap so that was fun to see as I thought the bear area might be closed off by this time. Lots of work seems to have been done to the bear pond which was half full and so showing the construction and reinforcement of the sides. No possums despite them being signed in at least five places (the grand possum hunt continues).
