Hamilton Zoo Hamilton Zoo News 2015

You can now vote on the name choice for the Hamilton Zoo Tiger Cubs.
Short list is:
Male - Maliki, Senja, Kembali
Female - Aalia, Kirana, Jaya
Vote for our tiger cub names - Hamilton Zoo

Senja = breeding tigress at Wellington Zoo
Kembali = tiger at Taronga Zoo
Kirana = Sali's first cousin
Jaya = Sali's brother at Perth Zoo as well as the young tigress at Dreamworld

Do we really need three tigers called Jaya? I'll be voting for Maliki and Aalia, regardless of my preference for the other four names for the sake of diversity :p

Personally my vote went for Kepala: Indonesian for chief. It's a good masculine name for the male cub, and of course ties with Hamilton (Waikato's) rugby team: the Cheifs. If the zoo had wanted to go for a Hamilton theme here, they could have chosen an Indonesian name to reflect birthday/celebration etc. as these cubs were born in 2014: Hamilton's 150th birthday.

The Tiger Cubs names have been voted as Kembali for the male and Kirana for the female.

Hamilton Zoo's growing Sumatran tiger cubs have been given traditional Indonesian names.

The zoo's adoring public weighed in on a competition to name the six-month old cubs, with the incentive of an up-close encounter with one of the zoo's five tigers.

Jennifer Finucane from Auckland was the first entrant to suggest Kirana for the female, which means beautiful ray of light.

Stephen Garth Satherley from Wellington suggested Kembali for the male, which means return, come back or invincible.

Zoo curator Samantha Kudeweh said close to 800 entries were received, and almost 1000 votes came in for the top six names.

Kembali and Kirana were bred as part of the zoo's contribution to a captive tigers global breeding programme.

Born on November 16, the cubs were gaining confidence and hiding in the reeds much less than they used to, Kudeweh said.

Kembali was sitting at 26.5kg at his last weigh-in, and Kirana 24.3kg, which zoo staff were happy with.

Dad Oz was still in a separate enclosure, which sits next door to mum Sali and the two cubs.

"But [Oz and the cubs] do a lot of interaction through the mesh. He spends a lot of time on the other side of the fence just chilling."

The winning entrants have each won a Face2Face tiger encounter, a one year flexi pass to the zoo and a tiger pack from the zoo shop.

The glasshouse that did have the Tamarins was now empty for an exciting new inhabitant. I think its too small for anything but reptiles.

Do you know what the "exciting new inhabitant" turned out to be?

Hamilton Zoo's financial year just gone had a record visitation high.

News - Hamilton City Council
3 July 2015

Hamilton Zoo has enjoyed a record year of visitor numbers with 128,519 visitors through the door in the last financial year.

The increase, from July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2015 is 7,254 higher than the previous year, and 4279 visitors higher than the previous record set in 2007/2008.

Zoo Director Stephen Standley says: “The six per cent growth is a great achievement, resulting from the rare opportunity to see tiger cubs at the zoo combined with our focus on improving the overall visitor experience. We want our visitors to have fun and enjoy their visit, having chosen to spend their time with us.”

“Hamilton Zoo has kept Sumatran tigers since 2001 and this is the first time we have bred this critically endangered sub-species,” Mr Standley says.

“The birth of the Sumatran tiger cubs, Kembali and Kirana, in November 2014 was planned as part of the international breeding programme for the species and it may be the last time we are asked to breed them for many more years. So it’s great to see people take the opportunity to see tiger cubs.” says Mr Standley.

Hamilton Zoo is currently building a new enclosure for its resident siamang gibbons where they will be free to exhibit their full range of natural behaviours in trees high above the zoo. The project is due to be completed in October.

The zoo will also welcome around 1000 extra students from low-decile schools through The Warehouse Zoofari, a programme designed to remove the transport barriers to the zoo for schools which don’t get funding for learning experiences outside the classroom. The first school visits as part of the initiative begin after the July school holidays.

Rated Hamilton’s second-best attraction behind Hamilton Gardens by Tripadvisor, Hamilton Zoo is New Zealand’s second biggest zoo, home to more than 600 native and exotic animals and set amid 25 hectares of lush and natural surroundings.

Does this open the door for other species of Antelope to be imported from Australia? Species such as SH Oryx, Addax, Eland etc are all in decent numbers in Australia to be able to export.

here's a little bit from an Australian newspaper: Blackbucks off to New Zealand | The Observer
Eight Indian blackbuck females spent a month in the newly established quarantine facility at Altina Wildlife Park are on their way to Hamilton Zoo in New Zealand.

The females will be matched with males chosen for them in time for the next breeding season.

The three different bloodlines exported will increase the genetic diversity of the Indian blackbuck in captivity in New Zealand.
