Thank you very much Dassie rat, and yeah i've noticed that it joined the caracal in the same genus.

One last question : I know that genus Lynx has its own plate ... as well as Panthera pardus.
How about the rest ? How are they distributed??

Plate 9 is a full page plate.

The species and subspecies are as follows:
Pallas's cat (Otocolobus manul manul and O.m. ferrugineus)
Rusty-spotted cat (Prionailurus rubiginosus)
Flat-headed cat (Prionailurus planiceps)
Fishing cat (Prionailurus viverrinus)
Leopard cat (Prionailurus bengalensis bengalensis, P.b. borneoensis, P.b. euptilurus, P.b. iriomotensis)

Please note that the Iriomote cat is now just a subspecies of leopard cat. It was originally described in a new genus, Mayailurus.

Not all subspecies are illustrated in plate 9. The book notes 3 subspecies of Pallas's cat, 3 subspecies of rusty-spotted cat, 2 subspecies of fishing cat and 12 recognised subspecies of leopard cat.

That said, I am not in full agreement with this lumping - I certainly agree the Iriomote Cat belongs within Prionailurus but do not agree it is only distinct at subspecific level; in point of fact I also disagree with the lumping of Amur Cat.
 
I have been to zoos, such as Brno, where Amur leopard cats have been classified as a distinct species, which would now be Prionailurus euptilurus.

I saw euptilurus leopard cats for the first time, in the late nineteen eighties, on my third visit to Berlin. They were in the (west) Berlin Zoo, not the (east) Berlin Tierpark, where they were labelled as a distinct species, not a sub-species of leopard cat.

My initial reaction was that, superficially, they resembled fishing cats much more than they looked like any form of leopard cat that I’d seen previously.

A comparative observation which I believe I have made on this forum on a number of occasions :) I would be happier to accept the Iriomote Cat as a subspecies of Amur Cat than I would the current status quo, incidentally, although I remain convinced the Iriomote does merit species status.

I've seen some works that classify the "Amur leopard cat" as distinct species from the leopard cat, and the Tsushami population is - by some taxonomists - considered a distinct subspecies now.


About the plates:
I'm a little bit disappointed to see that just three out of the 6 extant subspecies of P. tigris are illustrated ( saw it on google)...otherwise the plates sound fantastic, and i think two ssp of P.leo are illustrated right ?

...
 
I received a brochure in the post yesterday for volume 6 with a slightly-smaller-than-A4 size sample plate printed, which is making it very hard to resist purchasing it! :p
