Happy birthday,may I suggest that you visit Cotswold Wildlife Park,so that you can enjoy a zoo with some proper gardens for you:D
 
Thank you all, I really appreciate the kind words.

The pandas were being, well, pandas, eating and sleeping, but I had some great views of the cock-of-the-rock that made my day. I'd post pictures, but my little netbook isn't up to 21MP RAW files so they'll have to wait.

Cotswold is definitely on the list ZG, but Edinburgh's fauna knocks seven bells out of Chester's, and no pointless canal locks in sight. ;)

I'll be back in the zoo tomorrow, so much to see!

Yep, there are some fairly usual garden areas such as roses and mimulus, but also lots of primula beesiana in a wider range of varieties that are currently in flower at Chester, dozens of azalea and rhododendrons in flower and yesterday the gardeners were busy on what is a quite accomplished herbaceous border (grubbed up at Chester some years ago).

There are some annual plants, including petunias in baskets that are black (almost) and white, not something I've seen before. The presentation of the grounds is far superior and plants in the houses are in much better condition too... I could go on, and probably will once I have a better look around. ;)
 
I think he's answering my second point.

Edinburgh certainly has some interesting species but in my opinion the animal collection at Chester is way ahead overall.
 
Edinburgh's mammal collection is fantastic, and there are a few very nice birds. After that... well, if your main interest was herpetological, entomological or aquatic, or even ornithological really, it would be unlikely to be high up your list of priorities. So I agree Chester's collection is better overall.

Still a great zoo though, needless to say, and one of the very best in Britain.
