It looks like polar bear breeding in the US has slowed significantly recently, with just 12 births in the last ten years, but 26 in the ten years before that. Do you know why this is? Are US zoos going out of Polar Bears rather than build big, expensive exhibits for them?

I am not sure why there has been a decrease in the past decade. Even zoos with bad exhibits had bears breeding and at least one of them is still at that zoo. I am happy to see so many polar bears in their 20's-30's, but it also makes me nervous that a good amount of them may be deceased in a few years.

Why so little polar bear births in America

I'm sort of glad they didn't have cubs. I'd hate to condemn any other animal to live in their horrible grottoes. Especially since they seem to be treated like bastard cousins.

<<To old for cubs:>>

27: Aussie (Brookfield Zoo) male -- not too old. May be used to mate with Anana next year since they are currently paired together.
25: Nanuq (Columbus Zoo) male -- not too old. Just sired a cub last year and has been mating with Anana this year.

possible for cubs
23: Aurora (Seneca Park Zoo) female
23: Zero (Seneca Park Zoo) male

Artificial insemination was not used this year. They have not been successful with natural mating so I'm not counting on this pair, but you never know. Aurora's family are good breeders.

16: Anoki (Maryland Zoo) female
24: Magnet (Maryland Zoo) male

They are just starting to tolerate each other so I'm not counting on this pair.

23: Berlin (Kansas City Zoo) female
6: Nikita (Kansas City Zoo) male

I am hoping for this pair.

17: Chinock (San Diego Zoo) female
12: Kalluk (San Diego Zoo) male

I am hoping for this pair as San Diego has such luck with other births.

14: Berit (Cincinnati Zoo) female
23: Little-One (Cincinnati Zoo) male

Berit was given hormones this year to help her ovulate. Hopefully something will come out it.

17: Nan (Toledo Zoo) female
16: Marty (Toledo Zoo) male

This would be the only pair as Crystal was in holding with her cubs.

17: Szenja (Pittsburgh Zoo) female
12: Kobe (Pittsburgh Zoo) female
8: Koda (Pittsburgh Zoo) male

This is a possibility.

11: Cranbeary (Denver Zoo) female
13: Lee (Denver Zoo) male

Lee comes from a good family of breeders, not sure about their relationship, though.

14: Ahpun (Alaska Zoo) female
12: Lyutyik (Alaska Zoo) male

Ahpun is on birth control since they do not have a denning area for cubs (although they take in wild ones...)

10: Haley (Memphis Zoo) female
9: Payton (Memphis Zoo) male

Both Haley and Payton come from families with successful breeding history.

8: Talini (Detroit Zoo) female
8: Nuka (Detroit Zoo) male

They could definitely house more cubs.

12: Anana (Brookfield Zoo) female
6: Hudson (Brookfield Zoo) male

I'm a tad skeptical. Hudson did mate with Anana, however I am not sure how successful it was since it was his first time.

no male
6: Aurora (Columbus Zoo) female
6: Anana (Columbus Zoo) female

As mentioned above, Anana mated with Nanuq multiple times.
