Has any zoo successfully exhibited shrews?

I've got a question that's slightly off topic - has anyone ever kept shrews privately? (As pets, or possibly as a private breeding center.)

Etruscan Shrews are currently kept at 9 institutions in Europe (zootierliste).

The ones at Karlsruhe live in a rather attractive model of cut-out underground burrows.

This is basically how every single European collection with them on-show displays them, in fact :p

I've recently seen Prague & Plzen's set-ups, and although the cut-through burrow system faces the public, the shrews have had access to the rest of a large vivarium behind the burrows - if that makes sense.

Not sure I follow what you are saying , are these institutions planning on keeping solenodons ?

Sorry! I hadn't seen that this was a response to the solenodon post! I thought you were concerned about the Etruscan shrews. :)

No , I'm just concerned about the lack of any captive breeding of the solenodon and the absence of any ex-situ captive populations in zoos abroad.

Admittedly (and without wishing to bash the institution) this concern is only amplified by knowing a little about ZOODOM's historic track record with ex-situ conservation (i.e. with the endemic American crocodile subspecies in the 1990's) which was very poor.

Tama Zoo has 3 shrew species in terrariums with plenty of logs and rocks for hiding, as well as a little plastic jungle gym for climbing. At first I didn't see any activity, but luckily a keeper came and he roused the shrews for me. They were fast!

Long-clawed, Least, and what is the third? Is it also in the Mole House?
