In less positive news, 4 men broke into the zoo, stole a Chilean Flamingo, and injured it. The flamingo was found a few miles away, but could not be saved, and had to be euthanized. The men are yet to be identified.

Adding to the sadness of the flamingo story it has now been confirmed her mate was injured as well likely trying to protect her and he as died of his injuries. It was all part of a stupid fraternity prank and an arrest has been made. That doesn't bring back the two innocent flamingos but hopefully others will think twice in the future.

The young man charged with stealing the flamingo just doesn't get what hes done. Hes posted a rap online about stealing her. At least prosecutors will appreciate the admission of guilt.

The giraffe exhibit continues to progress with an anticipated opening by the end of the year. The Zoo is also working on a hyena habitat and another viewing area for the tigers.

A female blue duiker was born in April and a new sow have been added to the wallaby walkthrough.
2021 is going to be quite busy for Hattiesburg. Not only are two giraffes anticipated to arrive for the upcoming new exhibit, but an inspection group from the AZA is coming for potential accreditation as well.

On June 8th, the zoo announced that it has received (0.1) Virginia opossum named Olive that was rescued from the wild. Olive is now apart of the zoo's ambassador program.
