Entrance Complex

The first two Enclosures of the Zoo can be seen for free. The first Enclosure was for Syrian Brown Bears and Corsac Foxes. Bears and Foxes had Cubs on my Visit and Merle the bear cub was playing arround with her mother. They have a nice lush and green enclosure which was enlarged to give the animals more space. The second Enclosure is a small Tank for a Golden Spiny Mouse inside the Entrance Building.

Sea Birds to Geysir Lake

Now you are inside the Zoo Grounds. When you are walking to the Right you will encounter the Coastal Panorama Sea Bird Aviary. This is a spacious walkthrough Aviary with an wave simulator. It is Home to a breeding Flock of Inca Terns and several other Sea and Wading Birds. After the Sea Bird Aviary there are 2 Enclosures for Ring tailed Mongooses and 2 Enclosures for Fossas. Now you can see the Geysir Lake which houses Waterfowl and some Red crowned Cranes, the lake is called Geysir Lake because at every full hour a fountain shoots out of an fake hotspring. Next are two large Aviarys, the first one houses some rescued Stellers Sea Eagles while the second one is home to Southern Ground Hornbills.

Carnivores to Great Apes

The next Enclosure is home to the rare Asian Golden Cat which was unfortunatly a now show. Now you reach the Carnivores Building which not only shows Big Cats but also several other Carnivores. First you can see the Main Tiger Enclosure. The Zoos Sumatran Tigers had 4 Cittens on my visit. Inside the Carnivores Building you can see the indoor enclosures of lions and tigers aswell as a terrarium for golden poison frogs and an Enclosure for striped Skunk. After the Carnivore House you can see the Lion Enclosure. Next to the Lions are Meerkats and Porcupines aswell as an Aviary for African Carcass Eaters. Inside this Aviary are Hooded Vultures and White necked Raven. The South American Sea Lions live in an Enclosure which should be replaced because there is no natural substrate only water and concrete. After the Carnivores there are simple enclosures for aldabra tortoises, bactrian camels, prairie dogs and red kangaroos. On the right side are an Northern bald Ibis walkthrough Aviary and an Aviary for rosette Spoonbill and scarlet Ibis. The great Ape Building does not only have out and indoor enclosures for chimps and gorillas. There is also a Madagascar Enclosure with Radiated Tortoises, Ring tailed and the rare Crowned Lemur which was very active. Next are breeding Groups of Roloway Monkey and White naped Mangabey. Inside the Great Ape Building there are the indoor enclosures of the above mentioned primate species. But it is also a freeflight Aviary with South East Asian Bird Species including Bearded Barbet, Imperial Pigeon and Great Argus. You can also find a Enclosure with Emperor Tamarins.

Monkey House to Red Pandas

After you have seen the Apes including Epulu the Chimpanzee from Wuppertal which was sucessfully introduced to Heidelbergs Troop you can see another Primate Building. This Time it is Home to a Troop of Hanuman Langurs. They live in old fashioned Cages which should be demolished and new Langur Enclosures should be build. Next to the Langurs, the Rhesus Monkeys do have already a nice lush and green Enclosure. Now next to the Primates is an simple Aviary for Snowy Owls. The last few Enclosures of the Zoo are between the Lions and the African Savannah Enclosures. They are Home to Eurasian Eagle Owls, Common Ravens, the rare Rufous Hornbills, Keas and belted ruffed Lemurs. The Hornbill and playing Lemurs are my Highlight of this Exhibit. The last Enclosure of the Zoo can be seen from 2 viewing points, it is home to Tortoises, Tufted Deer and Red Panda.

My Opinion

Heidelberg has some old Enclosures that should be demolished like the Sea Lion Pool or the Langur Cages. But the Zoo does have some nice rare species for an midsized City Zoo. I espacialy like the Nature arround us and the Bear Enclosure. Some of the Enclosures could be larger but i think most of them are at least good some of them like the Bears, Racoons and Rhesus Monkey Enclosures are very good. I can recommend the Zoo to every Zoo Chatter who loves rare Birds, Primates and small Carnivores.
