Hello + A Request

Hi everyone!

My name is Danny; I'm a graduate student at University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. I'm writing my thesis on photographs from the London Zoo taken during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. A source that would be really useful going forward is Illustrated Guide to London Zoo (1904) by P. Mitchell. I haven't had any luck finding the 1904 edition so I just thought I'd see if anyone here has any leads on where to find a copy...

If you have any ideas, please let me know. I would be eternally grateful!

@Tim May may know, and welcome!
As "Dassie rat" has already mentioned, you should contact the Zoological Society of London Library; the library will have a copy of the 1904 London Zoo Guidebook.

You can e-mail the library at library@zsl.org.

Please be aware, though, that the library is currently being refurbished so you'll probably experience a longer than normal delay in receiving a response.

The book "London Zoo from Old Photographs" (John Edwards) will probably be very useful too.

Since you're interested in London Zoo in 1904, you should look at this thread too:

Thank you @Dassie rat and @Tim May ! I did actually reach out to the ZSL back in September and they said that they weren't able to scan and email documents to me. Hopefully I'll be able to get to London at some point in the future. Thanks again for the quick replies.

Great choice for a thesis

There were two editions published in 1904; I own a copy of the latter and would happily provide info and scans if you can indicate what you specifically need :)

That would be wonderful, thank you! At this point in my research, I really just need as many images as possible. If you would be willing to send scans of as many images as you are willing or able to, that would be amazing.
