I am Liz and I'm from Wirral, UK.

My friend introduced me to this site, and as I am a massive fan of everything to do with wildlife, I decided to sign up!

My home zoo is Chester, I feel very lucky to have such a fantastic zoo so close to home!

I hope to have many interesting chats with you all!

Hello Liz from another new member. I think I must be the only person who doesn't like Chester these days! I've been a member since 1991 but I haven't been there since 2008 and I've no plans to go again in a hurry. I'd happily spend every day at the Welsh Mountain zoo though - aah, those Macaws! I'd better not get on to Chester hiding most of its Parrots.

You are right Gill, we have met, I was on the EAZA behind the scenes event at the zoo a few weeks ago!

Wow PA how can you not like Chester? What is it about the zoo that you don't like then - apart from the Parrots you have already mentioned - which is a work in progress I hasten to add - the Hyacinth Macaws and the Derbyan Parikeets at the zoo are a great exhibit and there are others dotted around too.

Well karoocheetah, I read an article a couple of years ago in which the writer (I shall not say who it was, but he is well known in British zoo circles) said he hoped that Chester was not becoming too "self-congratulatory". I think it is. My feeling is it has grown too big for its boots. A few years ago a keeper at another zoo in the north of England said to me that Chester was "too good". I agree. I just think it has lost character with so many of its new exhibits. To say I do not like the new Elephant house is an understatement. I know most places are giving new exhibits silly names and I don't like it at all. Chester seems to be very eager to do this. On the subject of names I see a new Chester thread on this site refers to "African Painted Dogs" - aaagh! Trendy new names for animal species are guaranteed to have me foaming at the mouth with rage! I probably give the impression of being a grumpy old man (at 49 I'd prefer middle-aged), and I suppose I am. I preferred the zoo world of my youth and Chester today is a ling way from that. I am appalled by the prospect of "Natural Vision" and not only because Gorillas, the world's least interesting mammals, are on the menu!. I much prefer smaller zoos these days. For example Tropiquaria has a collection a fraction of the size of Chester's, but on my annual visit I am usually first through the gates in the morning and the last to leave in the evening; but then the opportunities for photographing Parrots are excellent. I've no intention of giving up my Chester membership though as I've had plenty of good days there. Oh, then there's the fact that the magazine is called "Z" (ludicrous) and is far too full of news of in situ conservation projects etc instead of concentrating on news from the zoo. Bring back the "Chester Zoo News" of the 1970s!!!!

Its okay we do need some grumpy old men, i mean middle aged men, on the site, just to offeer a different opinion ;) :D

Ok - each to their own, obviously we'll have to agree to differ opinion wise on the majority of what you say about Chester, although, I do have to agree with your issues about the 'prettyfication' of animals names - so to me African Hunting Dogs will always be that (or wild dogs) never painted - but I do understand the reasons locally (and I don't mean the thought that animals might kill other animals may offend the delicate sensibilities of the average zoo visitor) what I mean is that in Africa the conservation bodies (in an attempt to encourage the livestock owners not to kill every Hunting Dog on sight thinking that their livestock are at risk), are trying to enhance the profile of the Dogs and educate the livestock owners in conserving a really endangered species and if changing the name from 'Hunting' to 'Painted' is helping that then surely that is to be encouraged?

I don't have any strong opinions on the name of the members mag (but surely Z is streets better than 'Chez News (sic)' which it once was? ) and I think the content is a good mix really, I would like to see even more about the zoo animals in there but I'd have it a good 100 pages by the time I'd got everything I desired so maybe not.

Good on you for keeping your membership going as well, all much needed funds.

Feel free to be a Grumpy as you like - I've just spent the last hour in the lab at work shouting at Steve Wright on the Radio like a crazy woman (well he is a total ****) so I'm 100% with you on that one :O)

I always thought that Chez Nous was a rather clever name. I haven't heard of any names being bandied around for the new area for African painted wild cape hunting dogs - "Kingdom of the Painted Wolves" perhaps?

ps hello and welcome Liz
