Hello from a Taronga Lover!

Hi Everyone,

I am Mae and I am an animal, zoo and conservation enthusiast (obviously, or I would be here, would I :p). I had aspirations of being a zoologist, up until I was about 16, when I did a week's work experience in a private zoo and realised that many of the people there were missing fingers. As a semi-professional musician I had to make a decision - Was my want to be a zoologist strong enough to potentially set aside my musical love that I had already devoted nearly a decade to? It was at that point where I decided that no matter what, I couldn't go without my music and I might be better loving my animals from afar. Although, that being said, I am considering doing a degree in Environmental Science via distance education for sheer interest, but I am still considering whether or not I have the time for that.

Now, I am in my 30s and I am now a first time mother, with Mae-Baby-Girl about to turn 16 months old. I work in welfare and I am still very serious about my music. I have also recently developed a love of photography, which started from me asking my husband for a camera when I was pregnant, as I figured, we'd want to get photos of the baby when they were born. Instead of a little point-&-shoot, he bought me an entry-level DSLR and I haven't looked back since. In Mae-Baby-Girl's short little life, she has been to the zoo twice (it's about a 3 hour round trip to get there from my house, otherwise we'd be there pretty much every weekend) and we are planning to go there again on Saturday with another Zoo-Enthusiast friend and again in May with my husband (His first trip to the zoo in over a decade!) and then Dubbo Western Plains Zoo in the near future.

I am looking forward to exploring this site. Lovely to meet you all :)

Welcome to ZooChat Mae. I trained as a keeper back in 1985, and remember a young female keeper having several fingers bitten off by one of the Timber Wolves. That was on a morning I was training at the zoo. It can come with the territory, especially if certain precautions aren't taken.

Thanks, it's good to be here. Yikes! That poor girl!! I think most of the big zoos around here would be pretty focussed on safety, but this particular private zoo... well, they weren't exactly known for their safety procedures! But whatever the case, I don't regret my decision. I'm not really the outdoorsy type, I'm more an observer than being there in the thick of the action.

Welcome to Zoochat. It's always nice to have another Australian on board. :)
