Hello friends,

I'm an amateur naturalist and Wikipedia editor. I love visiting zoos. Being fond of reading as a child, I was enthused by Gerald Durrell's books. I earlier lived in Pune where I used to conduct visits for my neighbourhood children to the Katraj and Chinchwad zoos, a source of great satisfaction to me. At present I'm in Kolkata, where Alipore Zoo, a very old zoo, is present.

Interest should suffice, it breeds knowledge and knowledge comes with experience. Full circle.

Any reviews, any news items will be most welcomed by all, I am sure.

I personally know how Indian zoos work and remain somewhat critical there ... as there is much to develop in order to circumvent the ever political / State interest in zoos intervening in any conservation breeding or education policies CZA might want to develop for the nation. That accepted ...

But as I said before ..., we welcome all news (and hopefully more news by direct observation than just newspaper reporting). First of all, if you have experience of Katraj and Kolkata ... that will already count for a great deal. Zoo news and both reviews of the zoos is a major plus here.

It would be nice if other zoo forumsters / posters would come forward from the region.
 
Kifaru Bwana is completly right, welcome to Zoochat and send us all the news you can find and of course also photographs are always welcome !
Hope also you can learn a great deal from the other Zoochatters !

What kind of ecosystem is Kolkata in? You mentioned that you are a naturalist - what are some of your favorite local species? What you have in your backyard and local area would probably be very exotic for us!

What zoos do your frequent in India? Is there still an edict to remove all elephants from Indian zoos?
