Hello Shai, welcome to zoochat. As a keeper what species do you work with? I would be interested to hear some of the zoos that you visited on your trips - they sound great. Perhaps you could write some reviews of the less well known ones for us. Thanks.

Hey Shai, you seem to have a lot of experince a far as zoos go, when I'm set for life I hope to visit as much zoos as you! :)

i work in the small animals building- working with small primates : black lemurs, cotton top and golden lion tamarins and pygmy marmosets. we also have Rodents, reptiles and amphibians. i used to work with other animals as well - hoofstock and children zoo.
i should write some things about the zoo's , at the moment i am uploading some pics :)

Hi Shai and welcome.

Your 2 zoo trips sound like great fun. Look forward to seeing the pics. You might want to add some thoughts to the pics.

Looking forward to hearing all about your home zoo.

Hello Shai,

Welcome on the zoo forum.

It be nice to have someone from Israel informing us of comings and goings in Israeli zoos. Those that interest me by far are your own Biblical zoo in Jerusalem, the Ramat-Gan Safari, the University Zoo in Tel-Aviv, the Haifa Educational Zoo and the zoo in Kiryat Motzkin.

For starters: 1) Can you tell us something about the Mesopotamian fallow deer programme Jerusalem is involved in? 2) Why has the proposed interzoo transfer with continental Europe regarding Mesopotamians not yet been followed through? 3) Do you have a conservation breeding programme for dorcas gazelles Gazella dorcas isabella and northern/common mountain gazelles Gazella gazella gazella? 4) What future plans for new species exist? 5) A masterplan perhaps in existence?

Regards,

Jelle/kifaru04

Okay l have been looking at all your great pics. I had no idea about Ramat-Gan Safari. Any chance of a detailed review. The sight of a heard of hippos always imppresses me. Just cant seem to find there listings on ISIS. How many are there. I thought DWK had the most maybe not.

hey

First of all, about my zoo, the persian follow deer :
our zoo is leading the reintrodaction to the jerusalem hills, until now we sent around 20 animals back to the wild , a few kilomaters from the zoo. if you would like to read more about it :
Jerusalem Biblical Zoo - Research & Conservation - Animal Reintroductions

if you have more quesions pls write me!

about the safari park: yes they have a large group of hippos, i think around 30 hippos at the moment (i am not sure about the numbers i might be wrong) , the safari park is a big one...do you have more questions?

shai

Wow!! Thats huge! I have never heard of that many hippos in captivity together. Cannot find them listed on isis. Is the Safari Park any good? There web site is down.

I believe 30 is the maximum capacity of DAK - a huge group.

i found a story in the news in israel- from the 20/11/2007 The safari had 40 hippos , they sent 4 to another zoo. i guess it has changed since than...i will try to get some more info.

Okay so i/we need you to go to Safari Park and get lots of pictures! This place sounds like it's amazing. I can't imagine what 30 or more hippos looks like!!

Very curious as to why this does not apear on isis???

you should ask the safari that........and by the way they had a few problems with this large group of hippos. they tried to stop reprodaction and i am not sure they succeed.
the "safari" part is realy nice. that's for sure....:)

Would seem that there eforts to stop reprodaction have failed :D

Had never heard of it! Not that that should suprise me anymore since joining zoochat. It would seem that there have been several great zoos/sancturies/safari parks l had not heard of.

Will have to pay a visit next year.
