Help please! Primate holdings/enclosure info required.

Hello,

I am planning a project for uni, and need to know about primate holdings in the UK/Ireland. While I can use ISIS/zoo websites, these don't tell me about the TYPE of enclosures each primate group is held in. I thought instead I would put the collective knowledge of zoochat to the test! :D

I would like to know which zoos/santuaries in the UK/Ireland hold the following:

Orangutans (either species) behind glass.
Chimps behind glass.
Gorillas behind glass.
Baboons on mock-rock.
Capuchins (any species) on an island.
Squirrel monkeys on an island.
Lemurs (any species) in a public walkthrough.

I'm sure the experts on here will love to help you monkey mad, but as this is your first post maybe you could indroduce yourself inthe new mwmbers section so we can get to know you a little first . my zoo knowledge isn't as good as most, but I l know London keep gorillas behind glass as your starter for ten. Looking through zoo websites will help too. But a lot of exhibits only have glass in places for closer viewing the rest of the area being open plan or fencing.
 
This is what I know of:
Colchester Zoo have Orang-utans and Chimps behind glass.
Chessington World of Adventures has Gorillas behind glass.
Chester Zoo have Capuchins on an island exhibit.
South Lakes have a huge Lemur walkthrough area that takes up half of the park.
I think the baboon enclosure at Paignton Zoo has mock rock.
Manor House Wildlife Park has an island for Squirrel Monkeys at the moment.

Monkey World have both Chimps and Orangutans (primarily Bornean, but Silvestre is Sumatran, I think) behind a mix of glass and mesh; they also have a lemur walk-through with Ring-tailed Lemurs (and one Red-ruffed).

Amazon World on the Isle of Wight have a walkthrough for lemurs - their facebook page shows the lemurs climbing on people.

Cotswold Wildlife Park has a lemur walkthrough, as do Twycross and Colchester; Twycross also has all of the Great Apes (not sure which Orangs they have off the top of my head) behind glass.

Whipsnade has a lemur walkthrough and parts of the chimp enclosure are glass.

All the others I can think of have already been mentioned. Marwell used to have Squirrel monkeys on an island near the entrance, but they haven't been there the last few times I've been.

Seems like a good excuse for some zoo trips to me :D

Durrell (Jersey) has Sumatran Orangs and Western Lowland Gorillas behind glass ( with extensive outside areas, some of which -- for Gorillas-- has glass panels there as well).
Twycross Orangs I believe are Bornean.
Blair Drummond has a Lemur Walkthrough.
I suspect all Gorillas and Orangs are viewed through/protected by glass in their inside areas.
 
Blackpool has Gorillas behind glass and a lemur walkthrough.
Welsh Mountain Zoo also has a lemur walkthrough.
Chester have Orang-Utans (indoor and outdoor) and Chimpanzees (indoor only) behind glass, albeit the Orangs viewing is raised and the Chimps have a small moat.

Probably a few more that i've forgotten
 
Twycross has Gorillas, Orangs, Chimps and Bonobos behind glass both indoors an outdoors. It also has a lemur walk-through.
 
Wingham Wildlife Park and Yorkshire Wildlife Park has a lemur walkthrough.
Edinburgh zoo has a small amount of mock rock in the Gelada Baboon enclosure (I know, not a true baboon).

It might be easier to list those places that don't have a Lemur walkthrough nowadays-apart from the smaller and birds-only collections, that is.
 
Orangutans (either species) behind glass:
Chester Zoo's Realm of the Red Ape has indoor exhibits with glass viewing. There's some windows inside the main building which look out on to their outdoor enclosures, too. Blackpool Zoo has indoor and outdoor glass viewing for its orangs.

Chimps behind glass:
Chester Zoo has a chimpanzee exhibit with an indoor bit; you can view the chimps behind glass inside.

Gorillas behind glass:
Blackpool Zoo has glass viewing for both its indoor and outdoor gorilla enclosures.

Baboons on mock-rock:
It's been years since I last visited, but I recall Paignton Zoo having baboons on mock rock, though I'm not sure if they still do?

Capuchins (any species) on an island:
Chester may have had capuchins on an island, but I'm not entirely sure.

Squirrel monkeys on an island:
If I recall correctly, Bristol Zoo has squirrel monkeys on an island.

Lemurs (any species) in a public walkthrough:
Yorkshire Wildlife Park has a lemur walkthrough with ring-tailed lemurs and black and white ruffed lemurs.

Not many then, i thought about Longleat, but it isn't a zoo and an exception since they can only be seen from a boat anyway.
Is there no indoor viewing at Colwyn Bay?

It may not be a Zoo in the truest sense but Longleat is still a collection holding Apes without glass.

Colwyn Bay, I don't know, hence the ? at the end.
