Hi everyone, I have been working on a design for a speculative zoo/aquatic facility based on certain locations around the world. Think of something along the lines of Dallas World Aquarium on a larger scale, with vastly improved enclosures (many of my location ideas came from DWA's layout as a starting point). I have this designed as a hybrid zoo and aquarium - roughly 50% aquatics, 25% reptiles/amphibians, 20% birds, and 5% mammals. Currently, the layout is as follows:

Temperate Waters
  • Seabirds of the World (including Iceland, the Falkland Islands, Tierra del Fuego, South Africa, and New Zealand)
  • American Waterways (including the Great Lakes, the Southern Appalachians, Eastern Texas/Oklahoma, Florida, a desert mountain stream, and a Mid-Atlantic coastal drainage)
  • British Columbia (gallery)
  • East Asia (including a South Chinese forest and the waters surrounding Japan)
  • Southern Australia (including Lord Howe Island)
Old World Tropics
  • Congo Rainforest (gallery)
  • Indo-Pacific Islands (one gallery each, representing Madagascar, Sri Lanka, Sumatra, Outer Indonesian Islands, and New Guinea)
    • Mekong Giants (large display situated between Sri Lanka and Sumatra)
  • Queensland Rainforest (gallery)
  • South Pacific Islands (gallery representative of Fiji, Palau, and Hawaii)
  • Reef Drop-Off (large display for reef sharks and several other species)
  • Life in the Atoll (large living reef display with several species of fish and invertebrate)
Latin America
  • Baja Peninsula (gallery)
  • Yucatan Peninsula (gallery)
  • Caribbean (gallery including large shark and live reef displays)
  • Amazon Rainforest (largest of the galleries, unless you count all of the Indo-Pacific Islands put together)
    • Even though the descriptions for this section are short, rest assured that each of these galleries is significantly larger than most others in the facility
I have a bit more editing to do on species lists before I'm comfortable sharing them, but I'm pretty happy with how it is turning out and can't wait to get to posting them and drawing up some plans.

My main question to you - are there any interesting areas that I've missed in this plan? Anything you would add, or like to see? I'd love your feedback!

What does "gallery" mean in this context? Photos? Or does "gallery" mean something different in America?

"Gallery" as in a collection of enclosures within one room or large space, like an art gallery.
Exhibit perhaps? I've always seen that used interchangeably with "enclosure", though.

So like an indoor exhibit or animal house such as a reptile house or a bird house?

You might consider Sulawesi and New Zealand among your islands (consult @Chlidonias for Kiwi advice) and put more emphasis on rivers and lakes when you consider freshwater species, for example a Ganges exhibit could include gharial and mahseer and a Baikal gallery could have seals and several cottid species. For educational reasons alone you ought to include several of fishes from the Rift Valley lakes (many of the species are also wonderfully beautiful) and for conservation and education the goodeids and salamanders from Mexico are important. Then there are the desert species and cave dwelling species to consider (there is a wide rage from around the world to choose from). Finally, if money is no problem, you could have a refrigerated exhibit of Antarctic icefishes next to the Adelie and emperor penguins and a big open ocean exhibit for Mola mola, dolphinfishes etc.

Sort of - imagine the National Aquarium in Baltimore's Australia: Wild Extremes (forum photos). This is a two-story glass building, with several large aquariums set into artificial rockwork, smaller reptile enclosures, free-flight birds/small mammals, and perhaps a smaller aviary or two. The number of enclosures isn't the highest, but they are detailed, spacious, and contain a variety of species in each. The scenery with artificial rockwork, live plants, and running water greatly enhances the feel of actually walking through a rainforest in Queensland.

Now imagine this expanded to each geographic zone - in my context, for example, the New Guinea gallery will be a large glass building/dome with several free-flight bird species, 3 smaller aviaries for separating species, 6 assorted medium-large reptile enclosures, 2 large freshwater aquariums, a living reef tank, a saltwater touch tank, and 2 smaller aquariums.

Thanks for the ideas! I have Sulawesi represented under the Outer Indonesian Islands (the Moluccas, Sulawesi, and Timor).

New Zealand has a few bird representatives, but no major aquatic species - although, there is a decent amount of cross-over with the Southern Australian species. Part of my goal with this facility has been to at least make the species selection reasonable - my rule of thumb has been that there must be at least 2 facilities holding individuals of a species within the United States, or they must be available in the private marketplace. This makes a NZ exhibit much more difficult, with most enclosures being single-species based around Kiwi, Kea, Tuatara, and Naultinus. All amazing animals, but not quite the mold of this facility IMO.

I really like the idea of a "Caves of the World" exhibit - I know at least Plzen has something like this, but definitely an under-utilized concept!

Other Asian freshwater species should definitely have a place on the list as well, I agree. I'll have to play with the layout, but I think a "Temperate Asian Waterways" gallery would complement the American Waterways nicely. There's a host of species from the Middle East to far eastern Russia that can be included.

I am torn on the Rift Valley idea, but will likely end up including at least some species in some capacity. I'm playing with an East African Highlands gallery in my head (mostly for the threatened reptiles), so there's a good chance I can fit some unique species in there.

As far as the Antarctic/pelagic species, I am trying to stay away from most of those. Too few Antarctic natives available (except penguins, which are represented in four exhibits, two of which have Antarctic species - no Emperors or Adelies here, though ;)). As far as the pelagics, I'd find it hard to justify having such a massive system for species that are, for the most part, long, silver, schooling fish. Designing exhibits around reef systems, seagrass beds, shipwrecks, drop-offs, mangrove forests, and other habitats with structure just appeals to me much more :)

I noticed a lack of more northern areas, like up closer to the north pole.
Definitely a good point - I may try to add an exhibit representing Iceland, but finding species that are found in captivity could be challenging. I'm happy enough with my species list for the Temperate Zone to post it up:

I am guessing he's referring to their ability to clog plumbing, which I did completely overlook.

On that note though, they may work in a species-only tank kept separate from any other systems. A simple airline/stone for a bit of water movement should be plenty adequate on a mussel-only tank.

Another option would be to simply use clusters of mussel shells as decoration within the tank, and include signage indicating as such.

They would cover everything. The glass, the plumbing, each other. Any even the tiniest bit of water somehow getting into another tank would spread the infestation. There's a reason they are so invasive. A single-species tank with no water filtration system could MAYBE work, but the mussels would inevitably cover each other and fill the tank until there's no room for anything else in it.
