As I go around the zoos in the UK I have found many zoo and parks with different birds from around the world and some of the enclosures have not had a name plate so my problem is, does anyone out there know of a website I can download a book or information from so I will be able to name the birds or better still does anyone know of any good books and were to get them from

many thanks in advance

You could try to find a species list of birds at that zoo, then narrow it down to what you think it could be and then search for photos of those species.
Are you looking for photos of the birds? Or just lists?

I'm looking to find a website or book with illistrations and descriptions of each bird if possible
Any help would be great

A good idea though will use this until I can find a book or website thanks siamang27

this is a good one Category:Birds - BirdForum Opus but your problem will be that if you don't know what the bird is to start with then trying to find it by trawling through photo sites will take you a long time!

there are several world checklists of birds in both printed and internet form but they are just that (lists, no pictures). The only complete pictured guide is the Handbook Of The Birds Of The World (in multiple volumes, not yet completed, and very very expensive).

You should (if not familiar with bird families) find a book that covers all the families because at least that way you can tell what sort of bird you're looking at (eg, finch, quail, etc) and that way you can narrow your searches quite considerably.

Where would be the best place to get a check list from. (I mean which website has the best check list)
I am pretty good with British birds it just the ones fromoverseas I have problems with.

Mostly the tropical birds I find hard to name or place but I would like a list of all birds can someone help

put "world bird checklist" into Google and it will come up with a number of options for species lists.

this site http://creagrus.home.montereybay.com/list.html has information and general photos for all the families and this will certainly make things easier for you in at least narrowing searches

The best suggestion so far is to try to obtain a stock list from the zoo, otherwise you're facing a seriously uphill task. The plumage of many species varies with the season, breeding state, gender and region, so even if you find a photograph on-line it might not match what you've seen in person (weavers are notorious in this regard).
