Help with how to open a zoo in australia?

Just wondering how these things work just to start up a little zoo and then grow from there? I hear that it is one of the hardest things you can open up? Even before you start you will have to pay thousands of dollars to get all the paper work done. Just wanted to know from those people who are experienced in this sort of questions?

What state?
A private collection,or exibit?
Which species, 2a, 2b, 3a, 3b, 4? All require different standards.
How will you acquire stock?
How will you dispose of stock?
Any backgroung or accreditation in keeping wildlife?

You will even be asked for info like your country of origin/place of birth & other private & financial details if you apply in NSW.

The categories of animals 2a,3b etc are supposed to be a national standard, however in practice it is applied differently in each state & territory.

I don't think it has to cost thousands of dollars for the paperwork per se, it's the cost of compliance which will be inhibitave. I have no doubt it is the intent of these departments to reduce the number of non indigenous animals held in captivity in Aust ,not increase them.

I just want to start of as life a australian wildlife park and then introduce other animals from around the world. It would be in qld so i have know idea what you need for that.

I'd start with Dept of Primary Industries, Qld Bio security & the vertebrate pest authority, for the non indigenous animals. Then National Parks service for the indigenious.

It may be easier to keep non indigenous animals than deal with NP's.

surely if one is planning on opening a zoo one should also have some basic starting knowledge, not just go on a forum and say "duh, I wanna start a zoo, tell me what to do...."?

It's the age we live in. I used to get emails from students asking me to "send the results ASAP" or saying (and I quote) "I am very busy and don't have time to study all the notes. Can you please tell me which topics will be on the test?"

Nick, also would be worth deciding where in qld would you set up? I used to work up in townsvile at a zoo, and to me much of the east coast seems swamped. with the time and money (and im saying millions not thousands) would you be better off doing YEARS of research (which is currently where my partner and i are at) rarther than seeming so urgent?
