I am planning to go to Bristol Zoo very shortly and as I have explained before I love birds.
If you could help with what species to look out for and where about's they are in the zoo this would be great also what other species should I look out for in this collection

Many thanks in advance Adrian

EDIT - Will be putting a review of my visit on here within a few days of visit

There are some nice birds in the tropical house, but beware of the sun bittern. It left me a nice present on my shoulder. Also in the house are Victoria corwned pigeons, hooded pittas, roulroul and hornbills, can't remember which species. The house is also the entrance to the rainbow lorikeet walk through.

Try this link Birds | Bristol Zoo.
Near the entrance is the aviary with the greater flamingos + redshank + egrets + turtle doves.
There are masked lovebirds in the aviary beside the children's playground in the midddle of the zoo, and the walkthrough bird house (Forest of Birds) is very close. This has some hornbills in aviaries as well as a fairly small indoor walkthrough with roulroul, pittas etc. Then you pass out through the outdoor walkthrough (which used to be called the Wallace Aviary), where the rainbow lorikeets are the main species.
The west and south sides of the zoo (turning right when you come out of the bird house) have a series of aviaries. Look out for Palawan peacock pheasants, Sumatran laughing thrushes and Meller's ducks. The new aviary which has a backing of rockwork, left from when it was a penguin pool, contains avocets and Asian glossy starlings among others. There are half a dozen aviaries along the southern boundary of the zoo, some of the species are duplicated, but look out for fruit pigeons. Next to them is the circular aviary which originally held birds of prey; it now has three sections and holds lilacine amazons and azure-winged magpies among others. Opposite are the paddocks for a pair of cassowaries.
Zona Brasil, entrance by the pygmy hippos and okapis, has two aviaries for red-tailed amazons and scarlet tanagers. Don't miss the jackass penguins, Inca terns and eiders in Seal and Penguin Coasts.
There are also pelicans on the lake in the middle of the zoo and keas in an old gorilla enclosure  next to the Asian lions.
I don't think I've missed anything. Hope this helps.

Alan

I believe the hornbills were Malayan black hornbills (Anthracoceros malayanus).

Not bird-wise, there are some nice bits in the reptile house and the nocturnal house. Also, the Bug house and Aquarium aren't to be missed. One of my favourite species was the Lemer leaf frog (Agalychnis lemur). A quick zootierliste search shows that they're the only ones in Europe. A very nice species indeed, and can be found both in the Nocturnal house and in the Amphibian Ark, along with the slightly more common Golden mantellas (Mantella aurantiaca).

I was very taken (quite unexpectedly as I'd gone to see the gorillas) by the fruit bats - they're amazing. I also loved the nocturnal house, excellent exhibit.

many thanks for your replies am looking forward to my visit

I wonder does anyone have a map of the view they could scan and send me please would be very grateful

I was going to mention the bats but someone beat me to it... :p
I also like the Asiatic lion enclosure, it's not groundbreaking but I think it's more than adequate and a HUGE improvement on the original cat enclosures! Other than that, the seal and penguin pools are very good and offer some good photo oppurtunities, sure there'll be a decent picture or two in the gallery. ;)
I'm sure you'll have a great time Adrian! :)

Bristol is only about ten acres and roughly square, with Lawns and the Lake in the centre and the Animal exhibits around the margins and grouped in the S.E corner. As described above, there is plenty to see though despite the small area.
