MEET THE ELEPHANTS: Finally, the moment you’ve all been waiting for… The public is now welcome to view the elephants at the African Grasslands!
There are six: one male and five females.
The largest of the elephants, the matriarch of the group, weighs about 6,000 pounds. She loves exploring the ports in the enrichment walls and even uses her trunk to attempt to make the timed port doors open before scheduled. Her daughter is almost always by her side, making her easy to spot.
The second largest of the group, another female, weighs about 5,000 pounds and is very timid, yet very sweet. She enjoys interacting with the people around her and is very attentive to the keepers.
The third largest of the group, also a female, weighs about 3,100 pounds and may be a matriarch-in-the-making. When she can, this gal likes to assert herself on the smaller elephants.
The smallest of the group is a female and weighs about 2,600 pounds. Although she’s still coming out of her shell, this sweet girl seems to enjoy her time with the other young girls. She is also bonded with the bull, who weighs about 2,600 pounds.
He behaves as though he weighs about 10,000 pounds!
The male is very spunky and likes to remind the keeper staff that he is truly a big man in the making. He likes to interact with the females at the gates and loves to tear up tree branches.
