Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo Henry Doorly Zoo News

no but thats what i thought! We were supposed to get Josabelle (i think thats how you spell her name!) back and she was at Staten Island! Maybe the registrar was wrong. And i dont have any names.

Now that I think about it I think we did get the male from Boston! So what are names (and ages if possible) of the females from Staten Island?

The girls from Staten Island:
Jezebelle 14 yrs old
Saba 16 yrs old

From what I can find Omaha hasnt had any Mandrills in the last 4 years. When was the last time Columbus had Mandrills?

We haven't had Mandrills since we started construction on African Forest almost ten years ago. While I'm sad to lose our drills I understand that they have to leave in order to save the species. I also think Lincoln Park and San Diego should give their Drills to the EEP. Oh, and I keep forgetting to add: the Mandrills have already started mating! The mating I observed was on September 16! So they have only been here a little over a month and they've already started breeding! lol

They're going to Scotland, the Edinburgh Zoo, which already has two males and a female. I really hope Nora and Eschu (our drills) reproduce there. Zoo Atlanta is the only American zoo that has had any success with breeding drills so I think Lincoln Park and San Diego (who only has one female) should give theirs to Europe.

ISIS show Columbus as having 1.2 drill, is this correct or is it 2 females that are coming to Edinburgh?
Edinburgh are at the moment refurbishing the old gorilla house for the drill and an indoor enclosure for aye aye, i look forward to seeing the drills in their new home and promise to post some pics.
I agree with you that all the drills in North America should be moved to Europe along with the animals in Japan, and concentrate on breeding, building the numbers up, possibly even importing some animals from the "drill ranch" in Nigeria, and then restocking North America.

Found this website about the drill breeding project in Nigeria

Time for a new thread perhaps?

Lee Simmons repeats some of his earlier statements, but now he's talking about possibly having up to 14 elephants in the future. The Arctic complex will not only hold polar bears but walruses as well, and the Madagascar exhibit has been talked about on another thread and will undoubtedly be enormous. This is surely a top 5 zoo in North America, as there are already some stupendous habitats and the next decade will be interesting...

Omaha keeps on expanding, and whenever they build anything it is often one of the biggest and best of its kind. The Skyfari ride will join the Madagascar exhibit as one of 2009's top attractions.

For the record, I now consider Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo to be the SECOND-BEST zoo in North America! Only San Diego exceeds it.

Wow. Ahead of Bronx then? I haven't been to either zoo, but I find that a little surprising.

I visted Omaha recently and was appalled. Yes, Lied Jungle and the Desert Dome are big, impressive settings with some amazing habitat recreations for visitors. But almost every animal space in both exhibits was entirely too small--the hyrax trapped on 6 inch wide rock ledges, gibbons, spider monkeys, blue monkeys, tapirs, clouded leopards, pumas, coatimundis, bobcats, servals, rollers, meerkats etc. in spaces we would all condemn if they weren't dressed up in rockwork and lined (on the outside) with plants. And dozens of birds and small primates cooped up in "caves" no bigger than petstore window boxes for puppies. It's not just bad exhibit design, it's shameful.

Pacing Kit foxes, fossas, aardvarks, leopards, tigers. Elephants and rhinos cooped up in windowless concrete bunker for the winter. Very depressing.

Moreover, the grounds all looked beaten up (yes, it is winter in Omaha, but...). Graphics were falling apart where they existed at all, the overall look and feel of the place was a tattered 1950s state fairgrounds. Every square inch of the zoo is either painted or paved in the same drab brown. It is as ugly as any zoo I've ever been to (and that's hundreds). A giant new Madagascar complex is being built, yet 80 or so big cats still live in their 1977 dungeon (that looks like it was built in 1950), and bears pace their lives away in tiny pits ("renovated" in the 80s by slathering rockwork over the original concrete walls).

Yes, the people of Omaha love their zoo. After seeing the rest of the city I know why. It is all ugly and tasteless. Well, Nebraska is one of the few remaining "red" states that support George Bush and his kind--I guess it all makes sense. I couldn't get out of there fast enough.

Parts of Kingdoms of the Night are truly brilliant, but to see a dead owl floating in the nutria pool (it had clearly been there for some time) made me wonder what the low light levels were keeping me from NOT seeing.

An extremely disappointing visit--yes, the collection is huge and there are some interesting big ideas for exhibits that have been tried here. But thoughtful details count, and these are nowhere to be found at Henry Doorly. And if enriched animal space is a priority, this zoo fails on just about every level.

Everthing at this zoo is (or is claimed to be) "the biggest". Well, the actual animal exhibits certainly aren't, and in any case this is a classic case that bigger is not necessarily better.

reduakari it seems as if you are apaaled by every zoo you visit. Your appaled by Omaha and your appalled by San Diego. What is someone who is so anti-zoo doing on zoochat?Seriously your on the wrong website and maybe peta or ida would be more suited for you.

Just last night I was emailing a friend and telling them how Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo was a contentious establishment for many people. On this very thread there is someone stating that it is the #2 best zoo in North America, and then another individual pointing out the numerous flaws that can be found scattered across the grounds. I have already posted a comprehensive review on my summer road trip thread, and fully admit that reduakari is correct in many ways. The big cat complex is an absolute disgrace, and it is mindboggling that the zoo is building shiny new habitats for residents of Madagascar, a large elephant herd, and then for polar bears but currently there are no plans for the pacing tigers, leopards and lions. A decade from now the enormous number of cats will still be languishing in their prisons! The bear pits are also terrible, and there are many paddocks that are simply average across the zoo grounds.

However, the bright side of the zoo is that it shoots for greatness perhaps more so than any other zoo on the continent. Kingdoms of the Night is simply spectacular, and even with its failings Lied Jungle is better than either Tropic World or Jungle World in the eyes of many. The Desert Dome has its flaws perhaps more so than the other two "mega-buildings", and the sense of grandeur is maybe more appealing for visitors than animals, but at least the zoo is making a valid attempt at glory. Toss in the 4-acre walk-through aviary and future plans and there aren't many zoos on the planet that have the scope and dreams of Lee G. Simmons and the crew in Omaha. Yes, some of the plans have failed in terms of animal exhibitry, but at the same time there are some wonderful achievements in wintry Nebraska that outshine most other zoos of the world.

@reduakari: would you like to publicly announce your top 10 North American zoo list? I have an idea that it would include zoos that focus on exhibitry, like Woodland Park and Arizona-Sonora...

The fact that people are prepared to voice their opinions, good or bad, about zoo's is what makes this site great.
Reduakari is on the right website.

So it sounds like Omaha has no where near a top ten zoo. I actually wanted to go to this zoo until I read that my three favorite animals in the Lied Jungle have the three worst exhibits (Clouded Leopard, Pygmy Hippo, Tapir). Desert Dome sounded great until I found my favorite animal in there had the worst enclosure (the Puma). Kingdoms of the Night still sounds good, but after hearing everyone's opinion on Lied Jungle and Desert Dome it sounds like its not worth visiting. For those of you who think Pygmy Hippos need a large chunk of land space you are wrong. Also, if a Pygmy Hippo is givin the option between an indoor and outdoor exhibit it will almost always chose the indoor exhibit. For this reason Pygmy Hippos don't need an outdoor exhibit and they really don't need a big land space.

Now I'm curious about what you sat about pygmy hippos.
I've seen them inside and out. Can you say more about this?
How do we know that they may not prefer indoor to a bad outdoor?
Just trying to learn something here ;)
