Henry Vilas Zoo Henry Vilas Zoo News 2020

Polar bear moves taking place: male Nuniq will be moving to Kansas City in about a week, while Toledo’s young male Borealis will move in.

Does anyone else find it surprising that Berit keeps getting paired with polar bears who are too young to breed with her? I would have thought that it would make more sense to have this role filled by a post-reproductive female like Berlin at Kansas City (where Nuniq is going) or Nan at Brookfield to name but a couple of unfortunately many.

I wonder too. Is the AZA really looking at the sex and age gaps in any breeding recommendations?

They haven't been trying to breed her with the males if I remember correctly. They keep trying to inseminate her with frozen samples from other males.

Methinks, a no-brainer if you have the right candidate male of breeding age. They are much better at this than an AI can ever be.

Case in point: Have they ever tried to evaluate the female or any of her prospective mates for reproductive fitness?

Henry Vilas Zoo isn't a high-scale breeding facility. The number of species they tend to breed is small, as they serve as more of a holding facility than a breeding facility. They're a prime candidate for attempting this new form of reproduction. They've introduced the males to Berit in the past, but I don't believe they tried to pair them together.

I'd assume that they have evaluated Berit's reproductive fitness, as I'm sure they'd want a female with high fertility to be the one they try to inseminate.

@EserWarrior, if so ... it is better to move the potential female to a proven breeder and location where the facility is more apt to provide a polar bear breeding with more adequate facilities.

Henry Vilas Zoo has their brand new polar bear exhibit that has been designed for breeding bears. Polar bears are one of the few species that Henry Vilas is breeding and has the proper amount of space for.
