Henry Vilas Zoo Henry Vilas Zoo News 2023

12/31/2023 News/Updates
  • There are now three Rock Hyrax in the mixed exhibit, rather than there just being one. There was no new signage indicating who the two new individuals are yet. (Which may be coming soon, as the zoo seems to be listing the individuals on almost all of the enclosures.)
  • There was signage on the Black-and-White Ruffed Lemur exhibits stating it is breeding season. I wonder if they will be getting more offspring from their pair again.
  • The African Penguin exhibit remains empty and undeveloped. It seems like the potential plans for a beaver or a new penguin species have not been pursued, or may temporarily be put on hold.
  • There is a Blue-and-Gold Macaw on exhibit in the former turaco exhibit. There is one in there, and two in the walk-through aviary.
  • Golden Lion Tamarins are back on exhibit in the Veterinary Center. The female appears to have a lot of hair loss, presumably from over-grooming.
  • The Rhinoceros Iguana was off exhibit. I am unsure if this has been ongoing, or if it was just temporary.
  • There were new arboreal climbing structures in the Aardvark exhibit. It looks like it may be for a mammal, but could possibly be for a bird?
  • There are Helmeted Guineafowl in the former (still current?) turkey exhibit. They were in a smaller cage connected to the holding building and were not allowed to go into the entirety of the exhibit.
