After a quick volunteer shift in Milwaukee, I finally had a chance to make it up to Henry Vilas today. Here's a few updates:
*I unfortunately didn't see the new baby orangutan.
*A pair of hyraxes is living with the colobus monkeys in the Primate House. By the way, it seemed that the exhibit got renovated with a wood chip flooring and some branches - it looks pretty nice.
*A pair of black-and-white ruffed lemurs was in the indoor lemur exhibit, while the large troop of ring-tailed lemurs was outdoors. Whether the ruffed lemurs were brand-new and just getting used to their surroundings before intros or the two lemur species aren't compatible I'm not sure.
*The Somali wild ass pair seemed to be settled in pretty nicely; always great to see this species - kudos to this small Zoo for bringing in such a rare and unique creature!
*The Geoffrey's marmoset exhibit in the Rainforest Aviary was closed for renovations.
*The aardvark was pretty active - a first for me!
*Lastly, and the main reason for my visit, I finally got to see Arctic Passage. I plan on posting a more detailed review of this complex later, but I'll just give a brief opinion: while Arctic Passage isn't spectacular, it is still very impressive considering that it was a small free zoo that pulled this exhibit off. Plenty of creative and interactive elements for guests and great bear habitats are the highlights, while the complex also has a weak (but not awful) seal pool.
