Heythrop Zoo Heythrop Open Day

There's a species list on the forum for the zoo.

Yeah she's still alive.

It sprferred that you book in advance but tickets will be available on the gate.
From what i was told if you turn up on the day their is no guarantee you will be let if the numbers are getting close to the capacity of Heythrop, but if you have a ticket you will be allowed in as you are already accounted for in the numbers.

How about trying to arrange for the Sunday visitors to meet up to say Hi - would be good to meet some more ZooChatters . Don't to know what the programme of events will be and I do not know the place . Any suggestions ?

We got an e-mail back saying tickets can be brought at the gate, but still on recommendations we go early, mainly so we catch the 11am demonstration, as apparentley the 2pm one will be packed.

So definately going on the Saturday, looking forward to it. :)

the only Polar Bear in the UK is Mercedes at Edinburgh Zoo

As taun and Cat-Man have said, there are two Polar Bears in the UK - one at Edinburgh (Mercedes) and one at Heythrop (whose name I should probably remember but don't). Heythrop's is not, of course, usually on show, hence Edinburgh's being the only one on public display (as Cat-Man says).

I'm rather looking forward to this weekend - gonna be a bit of a social as well as a good creature day!

Her name is Zara, along with Dennis the Asian black bear ;)

10:30 at the corner of the Pygmy Hippo enclosure, you will not be able to miss it as its next to the Giraffe House.

I'd join you but I'm afraid I'll be stopping children feeding the monkeys and the like lol.

Hope I'm allowed to post a review; I know how the owner likes to keep the zoo's privacy on the net. If not, I'll oblige and delete.

Anyway, I thought it was overall very good: This was my first Heythrop open day, so it was a very unique experience for me. It certainly makes you realise how much input in regular zoos is purely for the public! I was certainly looking forward to seeing Zara the Polar Bear along with my first Asiatic Black Bear and Striped Hyenas, and whilst I didn't see Zara in the pool during the day I managed to see her and Dennis getting fed. The lemurs were a delight too, and it was certainly tempting to respond to them reaching out through the bars! Other animal highlights for me were the alligators, leopards and white lions, even if they are a controversial thing in the animal world.
I certainly enjoyed the Film Seminar, and Paddy the Badger probably made my day. :) The Big Cat Encounter was the only thing that made me a bit uncomfortable; I didn't really know what to expect, but I found the incredibly circus-like show with four tigers, three lions and a leopard that Jim Clubb put on (a reminder of his previous career I presume) with tricks, loud music and no commentary uncomfortable to watch, given that I'm personally anti-circus. Though I suppose they need to be trained anyway for media work, and they only have to do this once every blue moon...Hmm, I still think they didn't have to go for a big top style performance.
And I did meet the odd ZooChatter too; I met mhale and her partner for the second time and enjoyed a long zoo-related discussion in the Reptile Room, where I believe Ash was showing a royal python to gwaping children at the same time. Only managed to fit in a curt 'hello' though, as I could tell the kids were keeping you busy. :)

All in all, a good and informative visit.

That was me! Thought it was you. Yeah circus stuff kind of comes with (what is essentially) a circus lol, I wondered if you'd feel a bit awkward knowing how you feel about the subject. I haven't seen the act, same as last year apparently but it's still great.
And Paddy is cool :D

Very enjoyable few hours, although didn't make it into the show as too many folks and too long looking at the penguins . Very informative wolf talk :) and first time I had seenhyenas for quite some time
