Hi all

Hi im Karl i used to be a zoo keeper at flamingo land zoo near malton back in the 80's looking after the elephants susie and jangoli aswell as the camels, zebras, bison, red deer, ankole cattle, wapiti deer, peccarys, porcupine aswell as helping with big cats section and chimps loved every minute of it hard work but good fun xmas day the lot

Welcome Karl from another new member, already hooked. I'd have the Bison and Wapiti back at Flamingo Land tomorrow instead of the "Lost Kingdom". It sounds as though you worked with the Elephants after Gomba died. You weren't the Elephant keeper seen on Yorkshire TV when someone did a sort of keeper for a day thing were you? (I saw a clip of it on a programme - maybe "The Rock and Goal Years" - a couple of years ago.)

Welcome, I am not at all familar with Flamingo Land Zoo, is it like a bird zoo, or a full sized zoo? Thanks :D

@parrotsandrew: I'm glad you like this website, hopefully you will become a regular :)

Hi yes i was elephant keeper from 82 -88 after gomba died just had susie and jangoli , susie died and jangoli was sent to chester zoo and is still there aged 42 . Flamingo land resort as it is known now is a full size zoo but there are no elephants , there are lions tigers, hippos, rhinos, giraffes etc. it is also a large theme park and holiday village .

Thank-you KCZooFan, I think I shall. To add to flamingozoo's reply, Flamingo Land used to be Flamingo Park Zoo. The zoo area is pretty much the same as it has been for years, but the size and scope of the animal collection used to be far greater.

I'm now thinking Gomba was on the television clip I mentioned. You don't know exactly when she died do you? Am I right in thinking she fell into the moat (or was pushed by one of the other Elephants)?

Thank-you for that. I remember Gomba had had a serious disease (skin I think) in the 1970s and there used to be a copy of a newspaper article headed "And Gomba Cheats Death" on the Elephant House wall. I had always presumed she had died of a recurrence of that until a couple of years ago when a long-serving keeper told me she had fallen into the moat! That was the first time I had heard that and it obviously was not correct. As far as the year goes, it must have been 1981 as I have some photographs of her I took with a camera I received for Christmas 1980, hence I can date them by that.
