Polar bears Arktos and Victoria have been caught together on camera as Valentine’s Day approaches at the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland’s Highland Wildlife Park.

Staff at the wildlife conservation charity brought the pair together again following a European Endangered Species Breeding Programme recommendation and are encouraged by how well they are getting on so far:

Update from HWP confirming that "Our big three carnivore couples have now all been introduced, and things seem to be going well so far. " This relates to the Snow Leopards, Amur Tigers and Polar Bears:

Efforts to save the Scottish wildcat from extinction have taken a major step forwards after the first cat was introduced to the Saving Wildcats conservation breeding for release centre at the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland’s (RZSS) Highland Wildlife Park:

Valuable in the great scheme of things - yes. But when a zoo appears to have more single sex groups, single individuals and non-breeding groups than breeding groups, it can be a tad less interesting.

A few updates from my visit to HWP today:

• The male Musk Ox passed away a few weeks ago. This means this species can no longer be seen in the UK. Due to Brexit, no animals can currently be moved from Europe to the UK so HWP can't bring anymore Musk Ox in at present. The immediate plan is to move all the adult male Mishmi Takin into what was the Musk Ox enclosure.
• 0.0.3 European Elk have been born, although one hasn't been seen for a few days.
• 0.0.1 European Reindeer was born on Friday 21st May
• 0.0.? Amur Tiger cubs have been born, official announcement likely to be made next month
