Himeji Central Park Himeji Central Park news thread

The zoo will be receiving scimitar horned oryxes Hatsume (0.1) and Yūma (1.0) from Himeji Central Park next Monday. The plan is to mix the pair with giraffes and zebras.

Announcement from twitter.

In addition to sending away scimitar-horned oryx, HimeCen has also sent/will be sending four American bison to Izu Animal Kingdom (which is not affiliated with the Nasu and Kobe Animal Kingdom parks)
Announcement from Instagram

On March 6 HimeCen welcomed a Bactrian camel calf. As far as I know, camels aren’t as frequently bed in Japan, making this birth much more valuable than it seems to users who are much accustomed to seeing bactrian camels everywhere.

Himeji does a good job at breeding hoofstock, as seen with the birth of an addax, which are quite rare in Japan.

Have You any idea how many addax are currently maintained in Japanese zoos and where?

Further: Himeji Safari used to have a good breeding record with white rhino in the mid 1990's up till 2005/6. Currently, the zoo should have a pair imported in 2007 direct from South Africa ...., but what has happened since and where did the old guard go?

I'm not too sure, but I'm pretty sure that there are at least over 10 individuals spread across Japan.

Import of 1.3 Asian elephant:

Four jumbos to fly from Bannerughatta Biological Park to Japanese zoo today - Times of India

The four Asian elephants, including one male and three female jumbos, will start their journey Thursday to Himeji Central Park-Safari Park at Himeji in Japan.

The exchange of animals is part of a larger multi-exchange programme, where BBP will receive four cheetahs, jaguars, and puma along with three chimpanzees and eight black-capped capuchin monkeys.

The elephants chosen for exchange include Suresh (8), Gowri (9), Shruthi (7), and Tulsi (5).

The elephants are named Suresh (1.0), Gouri (0.1), Tulsi (0.1), and Shruthi (0.1).
Seems like this is a good group set up for future breeding. I assume the hands on contact staff are the Indian zoo staff members accompanying temp the elephant group and will return to Bannerghatta Biological Park.

Background on India's Bannerghatta Bio Park. The park maintains a pretty large elephant herd (29: 14.15 in March 2025) and breeding group. In the 2024/2025 season 3.0 elephant calves have been born....! Having said that, it is also probably one of the few India zoos to actually have a significant elephant breeding herd....

FYI: In the background, one can see the white rhino exhibit. You can just about make out one lone white rhino watching on from its habitat.
