More news from Artis: Hippo Tanja hopes to celebrate her 48th birthday on June 2. A day before, Sunday, everyone can come to celebrate and to watch how de keepers will give her a special birthday cake.

Tanja was born in Artis and she is the last hippo in a long tradition of the zoo. In 1860 the first couple of hippos arrived, a few years (1862) later the first hippo was born. Even a pair of twins were born in 1870. The first pair of hippos had 14 descendants, most of them died shortly after they were born.

After the death of Tanja the hippo exhibit will be closed.
 
Tanja is just a wonderfull hippo, and one of my favourite animals :D

I can't wait to see her again this summer :cool:
 
I ask teh question heer, becuase I think, its not necessray to open a new therad for it:

When exactly was the new Hippo house finished and occupied with Animals-Hippos-Malayan tapirs and Manatees-in 1966 or in 1967 ?
 
Quite sure it was opened in 1966, will check it however later.

Check it and I was wrong, it was opened officialy April 26 1967.
