Hippopotamus VS Pygmy Hippo

All my information came from a real good friend who works at ISIS Technical Support in
Eagan, MN. The info I have says there not H. a. kiboko thylo. im not disagreeing with you im just saying what I know. but even if that's the case it seems that's the only species of hippo that's breeding at the moment. BTW does anyone know the father of the Calf born at Topeka Zoo like a couple years ago? thks

According to ISIS 2011 they're H. a. kiboko and I doubt they'd just randomly change all the animals they had there from 2011 to now for no reason. And where did you get that Common is the only species being breed? Lowry Park just breed Pygmy.

@TeamTapir, I believe Whipsnade has both Common and Pygmy Hippo calves at the moment.

A couple other zoos planning on getting river hippos in the Future are Minnesota Zoo and LA zoo.

Columbus Zoo had recently made mention of the possibility of River Hippo but this is still up in the air.

I was talking about just common hippos within the 3 subspecies. it seems like Hippopotamus amphibius kiboko has the most hippos to breed.

Gladys porter and Omaha henry Doorly both had pygmy birth as well. there Booming right.

The validity of subspecies of Hippos has been called into question.

Right, and regardless, they're managed on the species level in the US. It's simple supply and demand. Hippos are expensive to keep, especially since zoo visitors these days expect underwater viewing, so many zoos that used to keep them are going without.

Take a female hippo off the Toledo Zoo list. According to their facebook, Bubbles was euthanised today.

So sad to hear :( . Emma and Herbie a mother and son still live at the zoo. Im wondering if Toledo now will try to bring in a new female to breed with Herbie. He's about 12 or 13 now.

I feel like just as aza has done with elephants saying you must have 3 females, they should do that with hippos requiring 3-4 hippos per zoo instead of the normal pair.

Slightly off-topic but can you still technically be following that rule with elephants even if they aren't all together as Bronx has three Indian Elephants but only two live together and a third is anti-social and is by herself.

-Yes, but you cannot regulate the behavior of animals so it is a general rule as it creates the best possible odds of living the way they do in the wild. Hippos are social animals ,just watch any video, so you should not keep just 2 as they should be kept in a medium to large sized herd.

Where did you hear that the LA Zoo is planning on getting hippos Jusko?

The last one just died and it was in what was pretty much a temporary exhibit. There were plans to build a modern hippo exhibit with underwater viewing, but they got cancelled when the elephant exhibit was expanded in size and got much more expensive than planned.

The Fresno Zoo has mentioned wanting to get hippos in the future again if they get their special zoo tax renewed, but that would likely be several years from now.

Likewise Reid Park Zoo will be building a new exhibit with underwater viewing, but that is several years away. It will be where the old elephant exhibit is, which for now will remain an empty eyesore right in the middle of the zoo.

Does the Handbook of Mammals of the World mention hippo subspecies? I don't have access to my copy at the moment, and don't recall what was said about them.

before Mama Petite died at Birmingham her and Tadpole had several calves that are probably represented on this list. That could be why middle aged prime breeding age Tadpole isn't matched with anyone currently because he is over represented in the gene pool.
