Hirakawa Zoo

Yeah, I had the zoo down for Sunny.

I am mistified these last few years what is going on in JAZA with their former successful black rhino breeding program. Aside: the white rhino despite new imports seem also not doing well ..., I cannot phantom why years of experience in safari operations (Miyazaki or Kyushu f.i.) have not continued into the last decade....????
Yes, imports of rhinos into Japan has not been in large numbers in recent years.
There was an import from Leofoo Village, Taiwan into Tobu Zoo in 2021, but no imports followed.

Based on what I understand, White Rhinos tend to breed better if they are kept in a group in a large enclosure. Most zoos in Japan, unfortunately, have rhinos in smaller enclosures, usually with a small group of 2-3 animals. This is probably due to space issues, and that fact that most zoos don't put a lot of effort into rhinos, but rather invest in more "popular" animals like giraffes or lions.

Also, I feel like black rhinoceroses are more prioritized due to their critically endangered status.
