No, Hodenagen is not keeping any species of wild asses together with bears. The black bears are mixed with baboons iand ostriches in a seperated exhbit of the asian section.

It's not wrong. Bactrian camles, american black bears, baboons, ostriches and kulan are living together in the same section,thats right, but the keepers watch the bears all the time, and all attemps of the bears, to go to the ungulates, will prevent by the keepers in their cars immediatly.

The safari park seems to have a large collection including Amur leopard, nyala, sable antelope and kulan all unusual safari park animals
Along with a breeding group of African elephant.

Whereas these days I have no qualms about Beekse Bergen Safari, Hilvarenbeek, Woburn Safari, West Midlands and a few other UK safari parks, I am not so comfortable with this establishment.
They have on a number of occassions lost very rare species virtually overnight after going into them in a year (viz the Leipzig dama gazelle tragedy that ended in Hodenhagen).
At all times the introduction of new species is very much geared towards increasing visitors through the gate. The over-commersialisation aspect at Serengeti Safaripark is staggering.
The biogeographical zoning is really crap and the educational value of information on species exhibitted given is also of a very low standard. The only good points in endangered species conservation I can think of are the white rhinos (incidentally it was their policy with relocating surplus white rhinos that got the chucked eventually out of EAZA and the EEP) and Amur leopards.
But for the most part I find this park questionable at best and not worth a visit at all from a zoo enthusiast point of view.
I do have a question though: Does anyone know which white rhino are currently kept at Hodenhagen (name, sex and dob)?

So they changed it, they have it done it all the time. Nevertheless, that Park is one of the worst animals parks in germany. I was there twice, and thats enough for my whole life.
Oh, you say this all the time about zoos in germany. Give it a break, please...
Hodenhagen has some monkey-enclosures that are not that nice, but the rest is great. It´s a huge safari and besides that is a whole zoo in it too. And besides the animalareas in that park, there is a big amusement-park for the visitors, but striktly seperatet from the animals.

This has to be one of the oddest and most unnatural mixed exhibits I've ever heard of...
Incidentally, Hodenhagen used to have three male Gorillas kept in very unsuitable surroundings- fortunately all have now left-Akili to the Artis group, Dango is in China & poor old wildcaught Kumba, who was never given a proper chance to breed anywhere, is dead....

@Animal. Oh, really I do ? Can't remember....I have a lot of background knowlegde to Hodenhagen, so I can sure you, this is one of the worst zoos in germany.It's not a zoo, it's a safaripark, and I guess, in no other park like this one more antelopes died within a month than in that one. A nice story is that, what happend to the Dama gazelles , which came from Leipzig Zoo to Hodenhagen a few years ago. It was the whole group ,Leipzig had to give them away to get room for the new elephant exhibit. Unfortunately, all Dama gazelles died at Hodenhagen within a few months, and altough the gazelles were still the property of Leipzig Zoo, noone at Hodenhagen has told the people at Leipzig about the loss of all Damagezalles. The Leipzig people read it in a newspaper,what happend to their own animals....And this is just one exemaple, Sorry, all other stories are more bad and I can't write them down in a forum. I've never seen a good monkey enclosure at this park, because they have none...

We do not knock German zoos, we knock badly run safari parks. Hodenhagen is - as I wrote - one of the worst in the western world. Something in the order of third world country safari parks for get rich quick people. A yes great ..... amusement, but not for its animal collection. Exactly, for the debacles with f.i. the dama gazelles (which incidentally were on loan only and Leipzig wanted them back at a later date) Hodenhagen was struck from the EAZA - and that does happen only rarely. It is a shame on the zoo trade and certainly does not deserve any credit whatsoever. I do not understand why people still defend this institution. The very fact that it is also run by a circus owner ... says it all neatly.

Animal I agree that most enclosures in Hodenhagen exept those for great apes are ok or good, but the main problem in my opinion is that the animals don`t get the care they need. I have heard a lot of absolutely disgusting stories which I unfortunately can`t tell here, but there are many, many animals dying in Hodenhagen as a result of inadequate care. No vet care given when needed, totally inadequate winter stables and antilopes dying from broken legs because the keepers (repeatedly) let them into an enclosure with ice and snow are just few examples.

Still a beautiful cat, I LOVE black leopards, just do not think it can be a pure blooded amur.

The Black Amur Leopard in the UK is not alleged as it has been DNA tested,and guess what it was an Amur Leopard!!!!This clip appears to be a couple years old, but I just found it. The park claimed to have a black amur leopard cub born. I know a zoo in the UK (as discussed at length on ZooChat) also had an alleged black amur leopard. Personally I think there is no such creature, but everyone on the UK side of the pond was convinced it was the real deal and seemed to take my skepticism as a personal assault. That is really good news, although I find it quite surprising. I know of no accounts of black amur leopards in the wild and their habitat is not the kind conducive to melanism. (In cats, melanism is almost exclusively confined to warm tropical forests, the only exception I know of being the high alpine moorland of The Aberdares, Kenya).
