Hogle Zoo Hogle Zoo News

The zoo will temporarily care for Finn, a male sea lion from the Denver Zoo while a new exhibit is being built for him there. He is settling in with the zoo's four other California Sea Lions.
There's a new face in Rocky Shores!... - Utah's Hogle Zoo

Small correction: Two other male California sea lions (Maverick and Diego) and two female harbor seals (Mira and Nika).

Also, those from Denver will know Finn as Maverick. The name change occurred as Hogle already has a male sea lion with the same name.

Recents Updates:

Dorji has been making appearances on exhibit both in the cool room and in the outdoor habitat. I will say, these sightings are fleeting as she quickly goes back to the off-exhibit space. It is quite enjoyable seeing the entire family out on exhibit together though as Dorji gets more comfortable!

A new species has been added to the Tropics Zone of the Small Animal Building. A Honduran curly hair tarantula Brachypelma albopilosum now occupies the small terrarium that has been previously unoccupied.

Hogle Zoo's two female African elephants, Christie and Zuri, have left and are en-route to their new home. This marks the first time since 1916 that an elephant has not been displayed in Utah. Hogle Zoo's long history of elephant care has come to end, and a new era for the zoo begins.

Christie and Zuri, the African elephants, have been transferred to the Kansas City Zoo!!

Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium on Instagram: "Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium is excited to welcome two African elephants from @hoglezoo They will join a herd of seven elephants, including a bull, Tamani, and females Lady, Lois, Lea, Megan, Tattoo, and Zoe, after a quarantine period. When Hogle Zoo made the decision to find mother-daughter duo Christie (37) and Zuri (14) a larger herd and a male partner, they worked with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums @zoos_aquariums Species Survival Plan (SSP) for African elephants to find the best zoo home. Experts agreed, this is the place! The herd will live together on more than three acres of outdoor space, including a large pool, mud hole, two waterfalls, shade structures, and a variety of substrates for the elephants to explore, interact and train. KCZoo completed $10 million of upgrades to its Elephant Expedition in 2020 and has recently renovated an indoor space for Tamani. Both zoos’ elephant care and veterinary health teams have decades of experience and have been getting to know Christie and Zuri and each other through multiple visits and calls over many months. The teams prepared the elephants for their move through positive reinforcement training and voluntary participation. Trusted animal care specialists from Hogle Zoo will stay at KCZoo for some time to help make the transition comfortable for Christie and Zuri. Give a shoutout in the comments to thank the team members from Utah’s Hogle Zoo and KCZoo. They are working diligently and passionately to ensure the highest level of animal care and well-being continues for Christie and Zuri. Elephant Encounter Updates:

The revamping of Elephant Encounter has begun! The 110,000-gallon pool has been drained and is ready to be filled with substrate. It is quite interesting to look down into the 10.5-foot-deep pit. Fence work has also started.

All signage depicting elephants has been removed. This includes the two “Elephant Encounter” sings, elephant infographics, and the bios for Christie and Zuri. The only remnants of elephants are the biofacts displayed in the African Lodge. Stickers have been placed on the maps around the zoo covering “Elephant Encounter” with text indicating that new animals are coming soon.

The southern white rhinoceros have been given access to the work yard (circular yard) which they have been favoring.

So who's gonna go in the former elephant yard?
Animals in all three guest facing habitats at "Elephant Encounter" are able to be rotated by keepers. For example, currently the southern white rhinoceros have access to the Rhino Yard and the Work Yard (circular habitat). Soon, the male Hartmann's mountain will be moved from the African Savanna and share space with the rhinos. The Przewalski's horses will share their space with Bactrian camels. There is a fourth off-exhibit habitat on the west side of "Elephant Encounter" that the P horses are currently quarantining in. Post quarantine, the P horses will most likely spend most of their time in the former Elephant Yard.

Other Late 2023 News:

On September 7th, the zoo announced they acquired a (0.1) North American porcupine which is now on exhibit in the Small Animal Building

NAME OUR NEWEST PORCUPINE! This new resident is sure to spike some joy! Help us welcome her to the prickle (group of porcupines) by voting on the name that suits her best. Also, ‘prickle’?! Cutest group name ever. Speaking of cute, this adorable porcupine found her home at the zoo after wandering 8 miles from the nearest wooded area through several neighborhoods. As risk of conflict between the animal and humans escalated, state and federal wildlife officials determined her rerelease to the wild would be unsafe and she was placed in our care. As she gets settled in her new home, there’s still one thing we’re missing…her name! Our Animal Ambassadors team has given 3 options for the final vote: Blackberry – After a native plant/berry that has spiky leaves, just like her!Echo - After Echo Reservoir, a beautiful destination in Utah where you could potentially find a porcupine in a tree.Fern – After the 20 species of fern that grow in Zion, Utah. Drop your favorite name in the comments and we’ll tally up the winner on Monday, Sept. 11, 2023. Check back next week for the official name reveal and come visit her in the Small Animal Building.#utahshoglezoo #hoglezoo #porcupine #animals #contest #utah #zoo | Utah's Hogle Zoo | Utah's Hogle Zoo · Original audio

Hogle Zoo’s new male Przewalski’s horses Equus ferus przewalskii have made their debut in the Rhino exhibit’s East Habitat. They are named Dimitri and Mikhail and are 3 and 7 years old. Both males were born at the Minnesota Zoo and arrived at Hogle Zoo in late 2023. A third male from the Minnesota Zoo was originally planned to join the others on the move from Minnesota but died before.

A bachelor herd of male Hartmann’s mountain zebra Equus zebra hartmannae has moved from the zoo’s African Savanna exhibit to join the southern white rhinoceros Ceratotherium simum simum in what is now called the West Habitat or The Kopje.
