Hogle Zoo Hogle Zoo News

The link above is to the zoo's Facebook post about the sand cat kittens. If you are not on Facebook, here is a brief synopsis of the post from the local news: Hogle Zoo sand cat ‘Desiree’ gives birth to four kittens

No birth date is given, but they must be less than two weeks old since their eyes are not open yet. While they are still in a denning cube, the cube is in their main exhibit (in the small mammal building) so in theory zoo visitors can see them whenever they start venturing out.

Brutus and Titus are being moved to the Brookfield Zoo.

(I'm surprised they haven't done this years ago...)

I do not understand your comment or why you have issue with it. I will agree that at their age they might have been (better) moved earlier. but for the lack of spaces ... and takers, this is the best outcome.

It should be clear the criteria and conditions for a move have not been met before. It seems more like a "could" than a "should". The AZA SSP African lion decides when lions are to breed and when they are to transfer to another location. Hence, the choice really is not up to the zoo concerned.

I didn't say I had a problem with it, I'm just saying, I'm just saying I'm surprised the zoo hasn't done this sooner considering Lion behavior in the wild.

When a male Lion reaches sexual maturity, he's kicked out of the pride so he can start a new one. That also prevents inbreeding.

Correct but the reality in zoos in the US is there is very limited spaces for bachelor groups. There probably weren’t any zoos available to take them until Brookfield lost a couple lions recently. Trust me that the SSP tries to mimic wild social structures as much as possible and they’ve probably been looking for a spot to place these males for a while now.

That does make more sense. Thank you.

Here are the new protocols for the zoo's reopening: https://www.hoglezoo.org/zoos-open

They include restricting the number of guests, mandatory face coverings, limiting visits to 2 hours via timed tickets, a one-way path, online tickets only, and a relocated entrance; additionally, indoor exhibits remain closed.

Thank you very much for the link.
It does not say, and I wonder if you know? - how they will 'eject' visitors at the end of their time slot
