Hoo Farm Hoo Farm zoo news

I bought a copy of the 2018 leaflet for Hoo Farm with new species to the collection shown to be Arctic Foxes, Zorillas, and Reindeer (Although I'm pretty sure there was a photo of one uploaded into the gallery last year, but I could be wrong). A new exhibition called Lemur Forest is also due to open this month and will house the following: Ring-tailed lemurs, capybaras, coatis, pigs, alpacas, llamas, ostrich, emu and water buffalo.

I once said a sentence about San Diego Zoo's Urban Jungle, it was something along the lines of, "Where else can I find animals from Africa, Asia, Australia and America in the same exhibit?"

Well isn't this great?

Step aside Urban Jungle! Lemur Forest has officially taken over your position for most geographically inaccurate zoo exhibit I've ever heard of.

i was browsing the Hoo farm website when I noticed that on the rivers rainforests and deserts page there was a desert hedgehog. Only when I clicked it there was information about lemur catta (ring tailed lemur)! Does anyone know if they have them, I hope so because the only holder on zootierliste is Arabia's wildlife centre. Any replies would be much appreciated.

While I have no idea of Hoo Farm's hedgehog holdings, I suspect that the species in question is not Paraechinus aethiopicus but rather the long-eared hedgehog Hemiechinus auritus, which is more widely held, as I have seen this species labelled as 'desert hedgehogs' in the exotic pet trade.

Visited Hoo Farm today for an animal interaction experience - there is a new enclosure being built opposite the serval which will house Rusty Spotted Cat. I didn't ask how many.

Did you happen to see the Blackbuck and if so were there still three(or more or less)?

Yes - but I only saw two. They may have been a third that I just didn't spot though so I wouldn't read anything into that.

When I went it was a pair plus a young fawn. They were quite nervous and tended to stay well back from the viewing area but very active. I suspect you may have seen all there were...

Don't they still have anymore Caracals over at Hoo Farm? Zootierliste now thinks they don't even have them there anymore now that Shaka has passed away....

Three there today

There is still one there, Thandi I assume from previous post.

I was hoping to see the Zorilla and Virginia opossum, but failed with both. But I did see three teenie wee African civets though.

It seems they took five years to find a female, only to have the male die, so now have a single female.
Indeed. I hadn't seen that before going, but knew Shaka had died recently. Thandie didn't look particularly sprightly to me; any idea how old she is?

I'll hopefully be visiting here soon (possibly along with WILD and the Exotic Zoo) and wondered if anyone had any tips on seeing the Arctic foxes, genets, zorillas and civets? And is there anything in particular that I'm missing that's quite special? Same goes for the other two collections as well. Thanks in advance. :)

When I visited they had quite a lot of genets in different cages with most if not all of them active, the zorilla is basically impossible (if sleeping) as it has a big bed of soil. There are also Virginia opossums and tailless tenrec:)
