correction: Whipsnade bred them first in 2006 an according to ISIS have done again this year meaning that 4 have been born in europe in one year. Excellent news.

Is it open? Is kiwi on display?
Yeah, opened. Lots of my friends have been there already and they all saw the kiwi multiple times!

@ writhed; Ok. I diddn't read the article very well. There was somthing in there about being the first. Probably continental europe then.

I am glad that the species is being bred by more than one collection. It somehow underlines that one should be very careful to claim a first before checking up all avicultural cohorts before making it publicly known. All the same, it is wonderful news that another pure-bred Penelopides sp. is getting a tiny foothold in Europe. Perhaps, Avifauna or Whipsnade could set up an ESB for the various holders.

I will go and check my avicultural friends here and in Asia whether other institutions have had success with Sulawesi hornbills.

Avifauna reports their first breeding of the Visayan Tarictic Hornbill (Penelopides Panini Panini). It's the first breeding on the European mainland...

Three youngsters are about to fledge :)
