Chester Zoo Hornbills at Chester since 1978

I would hope in the maned wolves old enclosure. Maybe in the spare paddock near the rhinos...... African theme going on around there, that they'd fit quite well with.
I believe the Ground Hornbills are going in with the Lechwe,I don`t know if you know but the Visayan Tarictic Hornbills are on loan from the Phillippine Goverment!

writhedhornbill,

What is the plan with the Visayan tarictics from the Philippines? Will Chester Zoo establish pairs in off-breeding enclosures and send offspring on to other interested zoos in Europe who want to become involved in Philippine conservation programmes?

There are four pairs of the visayan taricitcs at the zoo. Two will be staying at the zoo, and two will be moving to avifauna. The 8 birds are to form the nucleus of the breeding population.

Hopefully they will breed and the zoo will then send them on to other zoos interested in the hornbills.

One pair may have young soon, the pair in the old St Lucia amazon aviary. I have seen them courting and investingating the box.

Part of the labelling for the Socorro Dove aviary was a board illustrating a cat to let visitors know how much damage a cat could do to an island ecosystem. I was often asked by visitors where the cat was, they had seen the birds and wanted to see the cat!

They may have left the collection. I liked the St Lucia amazon. parrot iun the islands in Danger exhibit. Most of the parrot keepers also like him, because of his personality and the fact that he will not try and attack the keeprs like the other pair will!

What are the birds currently kept in Islands In Danger?

The amount of birds kept in the building seems to have gone down in the last few years??

These species were housed in Islands in Danger but aren't now:

Papuan lories
white eared catbirds
White collared kingfisher
St lucia amazon
Socorro doves

Now there is:

Red BoP
Tarictic hornbill
Golden heart pigeon
Victoria crowned pigeon
Mindanao Bleeding heart
Bali mynah
White naped pheasant pigeon
Palawan peacock pheasant?

Hornbill.

What's the situation regarding breeding the different Hornbill species at Chester now?

1. Have the Rhinoceros and Giant Hornbills bred at all recently?

2. Are the two pairs of Giant Hornbills related at all?

3. And the Tarictic Hornbills- have any of those bred yet?

Bongorob's Historic Hornbill Lists are amazing. From them I can see it appears they have bred both the Great Indian and Rhinoceros Hornbills in the past. However I'd still be interested to know what the current situation is- are the birds in the Tropical House the offspring, or parents, etc. and just their recent breeding history generally...

Well, I'll try, here goes:

The writhed: there is not a nest box in their aviary at present, so they will not be breeding until they have one. The keepers are hoping that next year we may hear the flap of baby writheds!!

The wrinkled: The female was paired with the zoos previous breeding male. He died at over 20 years old, and their old aviary has been split into two halves. One houses the female, and the other houses the male. The male was donated from a private breeder after he realised that he would not be able to pair him with a female in his own collection. This pair will not be breeding until they have been sucessfully intergrated with one another, at the moment, they don't get on. The zoo has bred this species.

Hybrid taricitc: This pair will not breed again, but will not move to another zoo in the near future.

Visayan taricitc: Two of these pairs will be moving to avifauna, and two pairs will be staying at the zoo. The pair in the old st Lucia amazon parrot aviary are courting at the moment, and I've seen them offering food and investigating the nest box. Hopefully that pair will breed soon. The pair in the first BoP aviary have not been showing any reproductive behaviour while I was there, so no young there. The pair in the old salvadori's pheasant aviary have a nest box, but it is too small. The last pair , the one next to the congo peafowl, and in the old hybrid pair's avairy, do not have acess to their nest box.

The graet hornbills at Chester are not related to each other. The elephant house pair came from Avifauna, and the other pair should be breeding soon.

The rhinoceros hornbills will hopefully breed later this year, or early next.

That's a pretty good summary, thanks.

So many Hornbills at Chester but I've forgotten already, which species are the ones in the Komodo Dragon house ?

If this happens, we'll never hear the end of it.

The hornbills in the Islands in Danger are Visayan Tarictic Hornbills.
