Chester Zoo Hornbills at Chester since 1978

I don't know which Visayans will be moving, but I imagine the pair in the old Hybrid pair's aviary will move.

Maybe one of the Islands in Danger pairs will move, but it would probably the one in the old BoP aviariy.
 
Can confirm that the Ground Hornbills are going to be Southern they are going in a new aviary to be built near the Lechwe and Black Rhinos,also to projects to open 2008 should be walk through Lemur Island and Cheetah!!!!!!!!!!!!!
 
Wow, Chester have always got something new that makes me go back every year! Where's the cheetah exhibit going then? Any idea where they are coming from? Hamerton and Colchester have both had litters this year.

We've heard about the lemur thing before on this site. Do you know which island and species will be chosen? I imagine it'll be the ring-tailed. Should be interesting to see how they overcome the problem of getting people on and off the island without the lemurs escaping - will they mesh the whole island? What about the risk of disturbing the flamingos?

Is the new aquarium still on for next year? They really should be getting on with that soon or it'll be pushed back to 2009.
 
Two years ago I heard that the cheetahs will be the northern subspecies Acinonyx jubatus soemmeringii, new holders of this form are needed by the EEP. I don't know where they will go, it looks as if there could be a need for a new enclosure.
 
will the aviary be a mixed species aviary with an african theme like those at edinburgh and london, or solely for the ground hornbill.

I still dont completly understand how the lemur thing is going to work and personally i prefer if the lemurs stayed on islands and not be stuck in walk throughs.
 
Sorry folks thats all i know about the new exhibits for next year,but some info on other stuff the Addax will NOT be coming the Chester for at least 3 years,you can olso forget about the aquarium for a few years as the zoo has decided to build 2 or 3 small projects for new exhibits over next few years,this is partial to do with the Super Zoo project and that the zoo has spent alot of money on major building projects over the last couple of years.All the new small project should be a cost scale of secert World of the Okapi!

An African aviary was included in the plans for the Tsavo rhino house, I think it was to be situated across the path, i.e. utilising part of one of the waterfowl paddocks.

Plan, my man! It would be nice to have a UK holder for the north-eastern subspecies. Sean McKeown is the EEP Coordinator for them at Sharjah (a rumour). Allthough on the EAZA website they still only list the southern subspecies ..........!

I really do hope they put these in close to the rhino paddocks. It be nice if the Rothschildt's giraffe and lechwe could be relocated where the Przewalski's horses and milu are now. That would make a nice themed African savannah exhibit. With Grevy's zebra and scimitars on the north side.

I mean that all the projects will cost below £500,000 like the Okapi House did,so in other words we can expect alot of small new builds,in some intresting places,like would any one miss the childrens farm if that was added to Islands in Danger.

We got a breeding female what more do you want,if a place like walsrode has trouble keeping them alive then Chester will,as they now only have 1 viable species and thats the Greater B of P,the other 3 species are either singles or same sex groups
