Hornbills in mixed aviaries??

I was wondering what species of hornbills have been succesully mixed with other species of birds in zoos?
 
Jersey-wrinkled hornbill, Edward's pheasant

London-Tarictic hornbill, Black and White casqued hornbill

London-Von der Decken's hornbill, Woolly necked stork, Abdim's Stork and other birds in the african waterbird aviary.

Edinburgh-Von der Decken's hornbill, Kirk's dik dik, Hammerkop, Marabou stork

Sulawesi wirnkled hornbill-Free flying, Parker aviary Other species include Crowned pigeon.

Long tailed hornbill was mixed in a big african aviary, but the birds died. I think it was in a German zoo (berlin?)

I'll try to get some more....:D

Lotherton Hall bird garden has red-billed with crowned crane, sacred ibis, night heron, hammerkop and assorted african ducks. I think tockus are the most reliable in mixed aviaries.
 
Burger's Zoo in Arnhem held a pair of Wrinkled Hornbill's in the Bush which went fine untill they started breeding and started feeding their youngster all the other animals in the bush, like lizards and chicks of other birds. The pair was subsequently moved to their own aviary and their chick was left in the Bush alone. So there's now 1 lone Hornbill in there...
 
Aim keeping my Trumpeter Hornbills (1 pair with chicks) with a large group (11) of francolins and that has worked just fine so far, the trumpeters has not shown any aggresions against the francolins, but I guess this may be becuase the francolins are aboreal birds and rarelly get into much contact with the hornbills that tends to stay high up in the aviary most of the time.

I have not tried keeping any of my other hornbills with other species but my Rufous hornbill breeder friend has tried to keep many of his hornbills in mixed aviaries, with varying results.

I could try and get a list of species he has keept with his hornbills if there is any interest. Last time I visited him he had three mixed aviaries, with a single Rufous or a pair together with other species.

The largest mixed aviary having 1 male Rufous hornbill, Luzon Bleeding-heart (3 birds I think), Chestnut-faced Babbler (several), Spotted Imperial-Pigeon (1 pair) and 1 Red-bellied Pitta (some Philippine subspecies). And he had a few more species he planned to try and put into the aviary. Awesome aviary and one of the best Philippine themed I have ever seen.
 
I remember Winged World had a large aviary with free flying red-billed hornbills and lots of other birds, the only species I can remeber was Rothschild's Mynah, and I only remember this because it followed me around.
 
Thanks for all the great info. Sebbe that would be great if you could get a list! We are currentlt reveiwing our bird collection and would love to have a mixed aviary with a large asian hornbill species!
 
I think the main thing is that the other birds are large so they don't get killed or eaten by the hornbill, and just bear in mind that hornbills will eat other birds eggs and chicks.

I have now spoken with my Friend, Romy Iglezi, and have the list.

His three current mixed aviaries with Rufous Hornbill.

Aviary 1. This is the largest of his mixed avaries. Has in the past held pigeons and African Black Crakes.

Rufous Hornbill (1 male)
Luzon Bleeding-heart
Chestnut-faced Babbler
Spotted Imperial Pigeon
Red-bellied Pitta

Aviary 2.

Rufous Hornbill (1 male)
Moluccan King-Parrot

in France, in CERZA zoo
A pair of trumpeter hornbills lives with Decken's hornbills and sacred ibis, african spoonbill, green peafowl, himalayan monal, and some ducks species (Dendrocygna viduata, Sarkidiornis melanotos, Anas capensis, Anas bernieri).
 
Antwerp Zoo keeps a pair of Von Der Decken's hornbill and a pair of trumpeter hornbill in their Cape Buffalo Aviary with a lot of other birds (francolins,guineafowl, several pigeon species, turaco's, glossy starling, ibis, egrets, hammerheads, abdim storks, whistling ducks, etc.) and cape buffalo's.

Yes, although the trumpeters only rarely leave their offshow aviary. I've visited nearly monthly in the past two years and saw the trumpeter hornbills only a handful of times.

Thanks. Although I was more curious about asian hornbills. I am conceptualizing a large walkthrough rainforest enclosure with multiple free-flying birds and ground birds. I was wondering if have 2 different species of hornbill would be possible.

I saw them fly across the entire aviary on at least two different visits, a magnificent view.
