This thread is mainly a question for zooish... but I don't know.. You might know something.

There seem to be many species of Exotic birds At jurong and As an avid bird fan I'd like to know a bit more.
Do you know the sex of the helmeted hornbills?
There are really rare in zoos and I think Jurong is the only zoo to hold it.
Are there any Bulwer's pheasants?
They are wonderful birds but are also really rare in Captivity. I know San Diego zoo has them and the Khao kheow open zoo has a few.

I have many more Questions but I don't want to flood the forum with them

This bird park is really something else . I have been there twice and both times I was amazed at the huge numbers of species they have -- and its located right in the middle of a heavy industrial area !

There are no Bulwer's pheasants at the Jurong at present although i believe they used to have it many years ago.

The helmeted hornbills are a male and female pair if i'm not mistaken but they've never bred before.

Pesquet's parrots have been breeding well at Jurong and there are several pairs.

As for birds of paradise, these are the species at Jurong:
- Lesser
- Wilson's
- King
- Red
- Twelve-wired
- Magnificent Riflebird (not sure about the status of this one as there was only one individual the last time i checked; probably confiscated by the authorities and donated to the park)

Feel free to ask questions jonathan. I'll try to answer them.
 
Yup they still have single-wattled and double-wattled. I believe they have a dwarf (Bennett's) as well.
 
Oh. I'm confused. It's not registered with ISIS. I shaln't rely on them too much in the future.

What pheasant species are there?
 
Jurong doesn't update its ISIS records, so they aren't accurate.

Also Hammerkop and Shoebill (commonly referred to as storks, though technically not)
 
Hmm... probably the most prized species is the Black-winged Starling. According to Birdlife International, Jurong houses the only viable captive population of this endangered species. An intensive breeding program has been set up recently with the support of Birdlife to greatly expand the population.

Other than that, probably species like the shoebill, 12-wired BoP, Wilson's BoP, spot-billed pelican, great blue turaco, etc.. are less common in zoos.
 
Oh yes... jurong holds the only captive group of wilson's Bop doesn't it.

What Hornbills do they have?

Nope, Jurong doesn't have Blue n Red lories (eos histrio).

Exactly how many red lories there are, probably even Jurong can't give an accurate figure. My estimate is around 200 to 300 individuals.

You would LOVE Jurong Jonathon! The 27 hornbill and toucan aviaries cover 2000 square metres and are something like ten metres high. The lower row can be viewed from two levels. The species list from when I was there in 2004 was as follows (2006 looked much the same but I didn't keep a record):

Ahhhhhhh paradise. I have to go. Chester only has 5 species. It's one of the bigger brittish collections and Jurong makes it look tiny!!!
 
Chilodonias' list is pretty much accurate except for the helmeted hornbills which have been taken off exhibit. I believe one of the toucan species (channel-billed i think) has been taken off display and replaced with Tickell's Brown Hornbill.
Also a couple of the wreathed hornbill duplicate displays have been replaced by Oriental Pied Hornbills as part of a local hornbill conservation project.
