Houston Zoo Houston Zoo News 2025

Going to be going on my very first trip outside of California via plane this weekend, to Houston for an event. Going to be going to the zoo while I’m at it, any unique or rare species I should keep an eye out for? I’ll definitely be taking my time enjoying the Galapagos, Pantanal, and African Forest exhibits. I’ve also never seen a clouded leopard before if they still have one.

The clouded leopard isn’t listed on the map but it’s behind the Amur Leopard and across from Komodo Dragon. The zoo layout is weird in between the tiger and gorilla.

One other thing is that the parking is horrible. So get there before 9AM. The zoo doesn’t have their own parking lot. It’s shared within Hermann Park.

47 reactions | Say hello to the newest (and most adorable) resident of South America’s Pantanal — a baby Baird’s tapir! Born overnight on July 23 to parents Moli and Noah, this spotted sweetie came into the world at 18 pounds and is already up to 30 pounds. She’s still rocking her baby watermelon stripes (which help her hide in the wild), but those will fade as she grows into her sleek adult look around 7 months old. The baby Tapir has been called NORAH.
Houston Zoo on Instagram: "Spotted: Our baby tapir! Say hello to Norah. Her dedicated animal care team chose her sweet name. You can see her with mom, Moli, on exhibit in South America’s Pantanal this week. Plan your Zoo day at houstonzoo.org! : Hoofstock Keeper Meagan"

Visited the zoo yesterday. Here are some things to note:

-There is construction going on right next to the white rhino exhibit.
-The Herculean beetle habitat in the Bug House will renovated for aquatic bugs.
-The Savannah Aviary at the end of the Pantanal is being renovated.
-The cougar exhibit is blocked off.
-Several terrariums in the Reptile House are being renovated.

Looks like the African dwarf crocodile has been sent to another facility. Went today and the previous exhibit now hosts box turtles. Stinks for a zoo that’s already really short on crocodilians
The last time I went they put the dwarf crocodile outside next to the crocodile monitor habitat

Houston's gorilla exhibit is often praised for the fact that the gorillas can access the red river hogs' dried riverbed space. Has anyone actually seen the gorillas and red river hogs in the riverbed together? This article weirdly suggests that the gorillas shouldn't have access to the riverbed, which is weird.

is the reptile house still under rennovation? as when I went last I know that half of the exhibits were empty, mostly the amphibian exhibits, so as i plan a new trip I wanted to see if anyone knows if the animals have been put back on exhibit.
