This is a thing I have always wondered about. How do they transport elephants and maybe other large mammals like hippos and rhinos over large distances ? I think you would need a very large plain to carry them, but is it possible ? The share weight of an elephant always intrigues me, how do they get a plain up in the air, with the weight of an elephant in it ? I know you also can ship them by boat, but that would take much longer time, and it is more stressfull to the animals than flying. I began wondering this when I heard something of, that an elephant was going to be transported from Europe to Denver in the United States. How did countries like the United States, Australia, Japan, and New Zealand origenaly got their elephants, by boat or plain ? To ask it in another way, is a jumbo to large for a jumbojet ?

Elephants travel quite well in general. Originally they were transported by ship, but now they can comfortably fit in planes.

One of the European companies who specialises in zoo animal relocation: Most of there clients go by road and sea, but there's the odd air shipment featured (see the Giraffe who went from Holland to Singapore in the 2nd link)
