How far would you travel?

How far would you travel/ have you traveled to see an animal that you wanted to see In a zoo/collection?

How far have I gone; precisely 404.38 Miles. Door to door from my house at the time to Baby at Duisburg Zoo.

How far would I go... anywhere within my means. After time away from family for longer trips, cost is the prohibitive factor rather than distance.

How far I've gone: From Berlin to Cottbus (Baird's tapir baby) Not very impressive I know. Or Dortmund if doing a detour on a trip from Amsterdam to Berlin counts (yaguarundi for the ABC challenge). All other visits were either opportunity visits or for the whole collection.

How far I'd go: Not out of Europe definitely. Saigas in Askaniya Nova? Nah (even if the current situation was different). Hartebeest in Wroclaw? Maybe. Mountain anoa at Krefeld? Probably not. It may be that I'm just so spoiled with the Berlins that seing one special animal doesn't motivate me to take long trips. Or perhaps I need another weird challenge...

The furthest I've traveled specifically for a zoo visit was about 450 miles. I have little interest in traveling off continent for zoo visiting. I'd love to for other reasons (wildlife) and maybe I'd visit some zoos while I'm there, but I wouldn't go that far specifically for zoo visiting.

Well, since I'm from hong kong, I need to travel quite a distance to visit basically any zoo with quality (that is not Chimelong). Taipei is closest but that's still 1.5 hours of flight in 800km. Singapore and Tokyo? almost 3000km.

Of course I'm not doing all these trip just for zoos, but for every places I've go, zoos are a big part in my stay.

To see one specific animal that I hadn't seen before, drove nearly 7 hours. My trip to Omaha was just to go to the zoo and safari, and Omaha won out over other options because of the cheetah tour (quality of the zoo and price compared to San Diego were also factors).

England to Germany to see the River Dolphin at Duisburg, but so many UK ZooChatters did that whilst Baby was alive, it's somewhat 'normal'

I’d frankly go pretty far (within reason, of course). I was hoping I’d get to visit Baby at Duisburg from Valencia after COVID, which is about 1400 KM from where I am, but his death quashed my plans. I still have hopes to get to go to Antwerp to see Amahoro and Beauval to see the douc langurs.

It depended on the species. But I'd say anywhere that I can be there and back in a day for most decently rare lifers.

Although I wanted to go to Berlin Zoo as part of a longer trip in the region, I ended up going for a three day trip mainly to see the Polar bear cub at Tierpark, which I visited on two of those days.

The furthest south I've ever travelled is London Zoo, and north it's Edinburgh. My general rule with zoos is that if they're far away and particularly hard to get to (like, more than two trains or a journey longer than about 4 hours), I won't prioritise a visit, because journeys that long take a few months to plan out.
However I'll occasionally make exceptions if there's a species there I really want to see. For instance, I'd like to add African elephants to my Zoo Life List at some point in the next couple of years, but the closest Zoo to where I live that has them is the West Midlands Safari Park, which is a five-and-a-half hour train ride away, so as much as I'd love to go there and most likely will, it's not a high priority.

I don't see myself travel far for just 1 particular zoo rarity or anything. For me travel (abroad) is only interesting if I can combine it with other activities, primarily wildlife and botanics
