How many European capitals lack a zoo?

I was told, the Zoo Paris-Vincennes will not reopen, because the planned renovation into an Adventure Zoo is to expensive, the Masterplan was cancelled and the zoo will be kept closed.

So one of the biggest Cities in Europe,Paris, does not have a real zoo anymore, so Paris is sharing the same Fate as like as London.( whats left of the former world-famous London Zoo can not be called a "Zoo" anymore, my opinion. )The Mengarie Jardin du Plantes is what its name says-a menagerie, full of old cages.I would close this place, sell the area and would use the saved money to build new, modern zoo at the Place of Vincennes. Paris without a modern Zoo-unbelivable.

Attica Zoo is located not in Athens but in small town Spata (suburbs of capital). Some other Balkans capitals are zoo-less: Tirana (Albania), Podgorica (Montenegro) and Pristina (if we count Kosovo as independent country). Also Luxembourg doesn't have a zoo. And Vatican I presume. :)

Long time ago there was a small zoo near Omonia Square in Athinai proper. They had f.i. wolves and wild goats. Not sure if it still exists???!

Omonia Square or Syndagma Square? In National Gardens are relicts of former royal menagerie. Wolves(?) cage is empty, only domestic animals (goats, donkeys) , aviary for small parrots, ducks etc. I'll try to find some photos from this place.

I personally cannot understand why someone who likes zoos prefer the demolitian of this beautifull historic place. Paris without the Menagerie Jardin des Plantes, that's what I would call unbelievable. Paris without a modern zoo, fair enough, there're plenty of other places where you can find this type of zoo. But like DavidBrown wrote, the new zoo will open in 2014.

As a London supporter, with many bitter years' experience of desperate attempts to do something worthwhile with the Mappin Terraces, I do sympathise with the Musee Naturelle's dilemna with Vincennes.

Trying to do something relevant for the 21st century with that mass of rotting, 80 year old concrete is an appalling task. If the huge outdoor reserve in the Loire valley wasn't quite so far away, I wonder if they wouldn't do better to make that the centrepiece collection.

Do you mean Haute Touche?

This is an extraordinary place - in some ways good, in some ways not. I'm not sure it would be viable, really, as a major zoo, however - not least because it is pretty close to one of the best and fastest expanding zoos in Europe (Beauval). And this in an area with little indigenous population, so pretty much wholly dependent on tourist trade.

You said it, because I'm interested in zoos, I prefer to close down the Menagerie Jardin du Plants, it isnt my understanding of a modern animal welfare and presentation. I did not say to destroy the buildings, I've meant, to stop keeping animals in this, can I say prision-like ?, place.

Make a Zoomuseum out of it-with platic animals, but please not with living creatures.

Here's an article from 2010 about the Paris Zoo renovation. It cites 2014 as the projected completion date and says that the giraffes are staying at the zoo while it is being renovated. Has anybody read anything more recent than this article about whether the project is going forward or not?

Paris prepares for major zoo renovation, to be finished in 2014 (no elephants included) - latimes.com

Despite of what you have read in the internet, I don't think so..a friend of mine has been to Paris a few month ago and he went also to the zoo in hope to see the construction. But unfortunately, there was absolutly no construction, only a dirty place, overplanted with wild plants, thats it..So I asked somebody with a good knowledge about the french zoos, because I was also very interested in, and he told me the story of what I've posted here with no chance of a reopening of the Paris Zoo.He told me also that there is still absolutly no construction yet.So if they really want to reopen that place in 2014, they have to hurry up...

Yep, that's what I was thinking of.

I do wonder if so many sites weren't under the Musee Naturelle's umbrella it might do better with its zoo operations. Vincennes is just one of 4 animal collections (or is it five)? It hasn't always proved easy for ZSL to manage both London and Whipsnade.

Maybe I'm wrong !

So I used google and found this article. It seems, the construction on the new zoo has already begun, but if it really be finsihed in the spring of 2014 ? We'll see...

Renovations begin on Parisian zoo at Vincennes | SmartPlanet

From the article:

Long awaited renovations have begun this month at the zoo in the Parc de Vincennes in the east of Paris.

If they only began in December it makes sense that there won't be much evidence of construction yet. So let's hope it is going ahead, it would be great to see.
