How many lions in Africa

Very interesting! Make sure you read the report below the graphic, which explains why the graphic itself is rubbish.

Ironically, in a few cases the loss of lions actually benefits smaller carnivores such as cheetahs (Namibian farmlands are a prime example).

you know what is also interesting? Reading the original research article from which the graphic was based, something the author of the linked article clearly did not.

I had wondered why the author gave no link or source of any kind for the graphic, only saying "These are the numbers proposed by IFAW, IUCN and Duke University in 2015" - the fact is that what is in the graphic is not numbers proposed by any of those organisations in 2015. It is -as far as I can see - just a stand-alone 2015 map sourced from the news company AFP (bottom right of graphic) made using older existing sources from IFAW, IUCN, and Duke University (bottom left of graphic).

The actual paper is from 2012, in the Biodiversity And Conservation journal - full paper here: The size of savannah Africa: a lion?s ( Panthera leo ) view - Springer - where the methodology is clearly explained and where the original map can be viewed. In fact if you look on LionAid's own site they give much the same figures for 2012 as used on this map.

Just the tiniest bit of research would have helped this author out a lot rather than just splurting words out onto his page.
