How Many Primate Taxa Have You Seen?

While I've seen these sorts of threads for many other animal taxa, I'm surprised I haven't seen a thread for discussing what primates people have seen. Here is my list of primate taxa seen, and I'd be curious to see your lists too.

Currently, there are sixteen recognized families of primates. Out of these sixteen, I have seen fourteen of them:
  • Lorisidae (lorises, pottos, and angwantibos)
  • Galagidae (galagos and bushbabies)
  • Daubentoniidae (aye-aye)
  • Cheirogaleidae (mouse lemurs)
  • Lemuridae ("true lemurs"- including the ring-tailed, ruffed, bamboo, and brown lemurs)
  • Indriidae (indris and sifakas)
  • Atelidae (spider and howler monkeys)
  • Pitheciidae (sakis, titis, and uakaris)
  • Callitrichidae (marmosets and tamarins)
  • Cebidae (capuchins and squirrel monkeys)
  • Aotidae (night monkeys)
  • Cercopithecidae (all Old World monkeys)
  • Hylobatidae (gibbons)
  • Hominidae (great apes)
The two I have not seen are Tarsiidae, the tarsiers, and Lepilemuridae, the sportive lemurs.

Within these sixteen families, there are approximately 81 genera, depending on what taxonomy you ascribe to. Genera I have seen are bolded below, with the number of species seen in parentheses. They are sorted by family, with families underlined. All combined, I have seen 43 out of 81 genera, and a total of 64 species. 63 of these species were seen in captivity, with the 64th species being humans:

Where did you see a tarsier? Cleveland or another US zoo before the last individuals passed, or abroad?

Bristol, I believe. Possibly in the US, but I'm not sure on that; I feel like I've seen one here but I'm not finding it on a species list, though my pre-2020 lists aren't complete and I've never been a primate person.

I tried to use a similar format to the first post but I made some intended changes and some... less intended.

I have seen around 43 species of primate out of 30 genera, with as many as ten further species I have likely seen but do not actively remember. I elected *not* to count those I did not have in direct memory. I only included one ambiguous case.

Red-Faced Spider Monkey
Black-Handed Spider Monkey (A. geoffroyi geoffroyi)

This one took some time, as I very often confused the black-handed and black-headed spider monkeys; but I did see the latter at Henson Robinson.

Pitheciidae
Plecturocebus
Coppery titi
Bolivian gray titi

Pithecia
White-faced saki

Cebidae

I have almost certainly seen Saimiri in the past, but have no active recollection of them. Similarly, I missed the capuchin at Denver and while Brookfield recently re-acquired them I have only visited once since and was forced to hurry through Tropic World too quickly to identify for certain the monkeys seen, but I believe they were still Ateles.

Are these genuine black lemurs (E. macao), or blue-eyed black (E. flavifrons)? The latter is more commonly kept in US zoos, though both are really cool species.

black-and-white ruffed lemur
I'd be very surprised if you didn't see a black-and-white ruffed lemur! They're one of the most commonly kept primates in US zoos, and up into the early 2000's there would've been some at the Lincoln Park Zoo.

I'd love to see the latter; Henson Robinson in Springfield still holds what appeared to be a genuine black lemur, living with their ringtails. I wish my photography was better!

Where did you see a red-faced spider monkey?
Brookfield held an individual, Esmeralda, until seven or so years ago. She was one of my favorites in Tropic World and the red face made her easy to identify from a distance. There's a great photo of her here.

I take it the drill was before they left Lincoln Park?
Correct. I am really hoping to see them in Atlanta sometime again.

I always forget they used to be at Lincoln Park, meaning I probably did see them! They were also kept at Brookfield in the Play Zoo later than that, though due to the upcharge we very rarely visited the exhibit once I felt aged out, something I feel a little regretful over... and all three of my adult visits have seen no active lemurs to speak of.

When I heard about this thread I had to jump in! Great stuff @Neil chace I will be combining my wild and captive lists.

Wow! I am definitely jealous of how many primates you've seen, and especially how many you've seen in the wild! Your Madagascar trip seemed to be very productive, as that's certainly a massive amount of new lemur species you saw (some of which I've never heard of before), and a wild aye-aye must've been very unique to see. Wild gorillas and geladas must've also been incredible to see, and those species are near the top of my list of ones I'd absolutely love to see in the wild.

I'd love to see the latter; Henson Robinson in Springfield still holds what appeared to be a genuine black lemur, living with their ringtails. I wish my photography was better!

Some genetic and pedigree work has been done in the AZA populations, and there were multiple species, plus hybrids out there. Nancy Ma's is likely the most common species in more reputable places, in particular Monkey Jungle has a large colony and has sent individuals to other zoos as well (going forward, I suspect any AZA zoos with an interest in night monkeys, however few they may be, will prioritize this species). In recent years, there's been the grey-legged species complex too, however that's one where recent splits have occurred and I don't know what is left in the AZA. Of course, private places are normally much more difficult to figure out what species are there, especially when there's a good chance many are hybrids, and even in the AZA night monkeys haven't been managed formally in about a decade.

So, in total, I have seen 85 species of primate. Hopefully I will be able to make it to the hundred mark very soon, although obviously these final fifteen species will be the most difficult, having already seen most of the common ones. I may be much closer than the above list would suggest, as I am only including species that I have a clear memory of seeing. Particularly regarding Howletts and the two Paris zoos, there are species, some even considerable rarities, that I may or may not have seen, but in the hopes of creating a legitimate list, have chosen to exclude. Of course humans are excluded, as it feels like cheating, and had I not made the agonisingly stupid mistake of forgetting that Chester had Coquerel's Sifakas as I entered their Madagascan exhibit, prompting the decision to abandon the area and seek shelter from the rain elsewhere, I would of course be one step closer!

Even still, before creating this list I wouldn't have expected to cross the fifty mark, so am pleasantly surprised with 85! Thanks for creating this thread and providing the encouragement to create this!
