How many species of Columbidae have you seen?

74 species in captivity (plus 1 hybrid, Ducula aenea x Ducula concinna), and 8 species in the wild. 6 species in both groups, so total is 76 species. Species seen in the wild but not captive are Zenaida macroura and Streptopelia tranquebarica.

I wonder how anybody in the world (Tetzoo Quizzer) can see 100 species of pigeons in the wild????? Only a person that traveled a lot with the exclusive objective of adding new pigeon species to its life list could reach that!

No, I have travelled a lot with the aim of seeing lots of birds, and now every bird family in the wild is my aim, but I have not deliberately aimed at pigeons! If I had, then there are easy targets I have missed, such as the three Laurel pigeon species. I have birded in Argentina, Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Panama, Guatemala, USA, Europe, Israel, Turkey, Morocco, Ghana, Uganda, Cameroon, South Africa, Madagascar, Thailand, China, Japan, Borneo, PNG and Australia, so plenty of chances to add species.

I've seen most of my country's native wild columbids except for those who only inhabit the northern tip. These include:
  • Feral pigeon
  • Eared dove
  • West Peruvian dove
  • Chilean pigeon
  • Picui ground-dove
  • Black-winged ground dove
Plus some escaped individuals of Eurasian collared doves.

Pigeons sadly seem to be an unpopular family at the local zoos, which mostly hold either native species or fancy breeds of domestic pigeons.

Here my list of pigeons seen in the wild:

Rock Dove
White-headed Pigeon
Topknot Pigeon
Rose-crowned Fruit Dove
Zebra Dove
Peaceful Dove
Bar-shouldered Dove
Diamond Dove
Crested Pigeon
Spinifex Pigeon
Brown-cuckoo Dove
Woompoo Pigeon
Spotted Dove
Orange-breasted Green Pigeon
Pacific Emerald Dove

I think I gonna split this one again in 3 parts : seen in the wild, taken care for myself and the ones seen in other collections ( both public and privat ).
For the 2 last groups I don't have a clue howmany it will be ( have to check several note-books ) but the first group ( seen in the wild ) is not so big and this one I've already worked through and came to a number of 18 species :
-1 : Stock dove - Columba oenas - the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany

-3 Speckled pigeon - Columba guinea - the Gambia

This is the list of species from which I'm sure I've seen them but I'm also sure I've forgotten at least a few species. In the 1980s / 1990s large numbers of esp. asian pigeon and dove species were offered in the trade and because I was a regular visitor of several dealers I'm sure I've seen several more species of Cuckoo-doves, fruit doves and imperial doves but I can't exactly remember which species but evenso with a total of 120 species seen for sure ( wild, taken care for myself and seen at other collections combinated ) I'm quite happy :).

Your typical urban pigeons (or rock dove), as well as Eurasian collared doves and common wood pigeons, are fairly common in my town, not quite on the same level as the dreaded seagulls but you still see a good few. As far as exotic captive species I've probably seen loads and just can't remember any, the one that comes to mind the most is a Victoria crowned pigeon at Edinburgh Zoo back when they used to keep tropical birds.

When I visited Edinburgh last month I scoured the site for the tropical birds, shame they don't keep them anymore as I was hoping to get a better photograph of Otidiphaps aruensis

New species for my personal list of species seen at other collections which I had forgotten.
Around 1992 I already had seen the Scaly-naped pigeon - Columba squamosa at the now closed Noorder Dierenpark at Emmen ( the Netherlands ) and last month I saw it again and was able to make some decent photos of it at Prague Zoo ( Czech Rep. ) :

By a little zoo-trip which I made last month to the Czech Rep. I can add 3 more species on my personal list. 2 of them I could have seen before in the 1980s in the Dutch / Belgium bird-trade but can't remember for sure but now I am sure that I saw the White-eared brown-pigeon ( Phapitreron leucotis ) at Zoo Plzen :
and at Zoo Prague I could clearly observe the New Guinea bronzewing ( Henicophaps albifrons ) :
A third species I was able to see is for sure a Lifer for me because I'm sure that in the 1980s no ( or very few ) birds from Madagascar were avaible in the bird-trade. At Zoo Plzen I was however able to see a nice specimen of the Madagascar blue-pigeon ( Alectroenas madagascariensis ) :
So now my total species of Pigeons and doves seen is 124 :).
