Inspired by a thread created by @Marcus Burkhardt called "How many Bovid species/subspecies have You seen (How many Bovid species/subspecies have You seen?)" I wanted to create this thread for Suids. Here is my list of non-domesticated taxa I have seen alive.

Red river hog (Potamochoerus porcus)

Central European wild boar (Sus scrofa scrofa)

Southern bushpig (Potamochoerus larvatus koiropotamus)

North Sulawesi babirusa (Babyrousa celebensis)

Visayan warty pig (Sus cebifrons)

Bornean bearded pig (Sus barbatus barbatus)

Southern warthog (Phacochoerus africanus sundevallii)

Non-subspecific Common warthog (Phacochoerus africanus)

There are also species I have seen in the form on taxidermy specimens in museums, but I'll make a different list for that. As far as fossil species, I don't remember off the top of my head if I have seen any in real life unfortunately, but I have visited the off-exhibit paleontology collections at the Museum of Texas Tech University and they have multiple fossils from Kenya excavated in the 1960s (which may have included some fossil Suidae).

I would be interested in hearing other people's lists.

South-Africa isn’t very rich in Suids both captive or wild, so I have a rather uninteresting and limited list:

Red River Hog
European Wild Boar
Southern Bushpig
Common Warthog

My list is pretty much identical to yours. In a zoo setting, common warthog, red river hog, Eurasian wild boar, Bornean beaded pig, north Sulawesi babirusa, and Visayan warty pig. Warthog is the only suid I've worked with as a keeper. I've seen warthog and bushpig in the wild.

Wild:

-Wild Boar (the wild-type/domestic crosses in Florida)

Captive:

-Visayan Warty Pig
-Wild Boar (actual pure ones)
-Red River Hog
-Common Warthog
-Northern Sulawesi Babirusa

Red river hog
Warthog
Sulawesi babirusa
Wild boar

Standard 4 i guess? Also got wild boar in the wild because they're quite a menace here

Wild Boar
Red River Hog
Bornean Bearded Pig
Visayan Warty Pig
Common Warthog
North Sulawesi Babirusa

That's all the captive species in Europe, can't imagine I'll see anymore anytime soon! As for specific subspecies, I'm not sure on all of them.

I have seen the following:-
  • wild boar
  • red river hog
  • Bornean bearded pig
  • Visayan warty pig
  • common warthog
  • babirusa
  • bush pig
  • pygmy hog
(I really should add my list of bovid species to the bovid thread too.)

You forgot babirusa Tim.

European Wild Boar
many forms of domestic Pig
Red River Hog
Bornean Bearded Pig
Negros Warty Pig (all UK ones are this taxon)
Common Warthog
North Sulawesi Babirsua

In 1998 I made the long trip to Kent to see Red River Hog at Port Lympne. My reasoning was that I would probably never get the chance to see them again. How wrong could I have been?

Oops. Indeed I overlooked babirusa. Thanks for pointing that out, Rob. I've now added it on.

It's fascinating how red river hogs went from very uncommon across Europe to becoming quite a common species (especially in major UK zoos) in a span of 25-30 years.

Common Warthog
Red River Hog
Sulawesi Babirusa
Visayan Warty Pig
Wild Boar

Just the standard suids I guess, I was hoping to see Bush Pigs while in South Africa, although those plans never ended up coming to fruition. Hopefully I'll be able to see Bornean Bearded Pig before they're gone from western zoos!

How many bearded pigs are still in North America? Europe is down to its last individual at Berlin.

To my knowledge, none are left in AZA collections, but there are probably still a few around in the private sector. Historically some AZA zoos that kept them have included San Diego Zoo, San Diego Wild Animal Park, Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo, Philadelphia Zoo, Gladys Porter Zoo, Brookfield Zoo, and probably a few others. The last ones I saw were at Gladys Porter Zoo in 2013 the second to the last ones I saw were at San Diego Zoo in the late 2000s.
