How many Waterfowl (Anatidae) species have you seen?

I've been fortunate enough to see a total of 169 waterfowl taxa (and 143 species) across captive and wild settings - largely due to the fact I reached Blackbrook Zoo, and the extremely large collection of waterfowl held there, before it finally closed down.

In terms of wild waterfowl in particular, I have seen a total of 57 taxa and 50 species..... which I don't think is too bad going, given the fact my birdwatching experience has been limited to western and central Europe!

I have to admit to mild surprise that you have never seen captive Lake Duck! I've seen all three of the latter species in captivity myself, but the Lake Duck isn't particularly uncommon as far as I know.

That is when you look to quickly on a spreadsheet, it is Andean Duck I have seen only in the wild and Lake Duck both in captivity and the wild ;)...

Are you still counting the captive Ferruginous Duck from Munich on your wild list :p

As I recall, you only proved that the ones in the grounds of the zoo were captive, not the ones I mentioned seeing in the Englischer Garten and the Olympiapark :p not that it matters anyhow, as I have subsequently seen two or three wintering ones in Spain (the countryside surrounding Madrid to be precise) back in March 2019, and another one which is a "repeat offender" in the north of England, returning every winter for the last few years, on a handful of occasions.

I had to Google what a Lake Duck was - I've never heard that name used for them before.

I'll need to check my lists (on my other laptop) before I know what my total is, but it won't be anywhere near the European totals in this thread. Waterfowl are one area where visiting Australasian and Asian collections doesn't do a whole lot.

I'm on 148 species (going by IOC taxonomy and taking 'waterfowl' as including Magpie Goose but not screamers - knock one off for strictly Anatidae :D ).

As TLD says, Blackbrook was a massive help back when it was a thing..! Kelp Goose, Steller's Eider, loads of weird stuff. Between there and the WWT collections over the years the coverage on my list just within UK zoos is pretty good.

I've seen 53 of those 148 in the wild.

By my quick count-up, of the definitely-extant species I'm missing:

Chubut Steamer Duck
Torrent Duck
Salvadori's Teal
Eaton's Pintail
Andean Teal
Auckland Teal
Campbell Teal
Madagascan Pochard
Surf Scoter
White-winged Scoter
Stejneger's Scoter
Black Scoter
Brazilian Merganser
Masked Duck
Andean Duck
Blue-billed Duck
Musk Duck

So mostly classic 'difficult' species for Europeans. I need to get my scoter act together, it seems!

Some of the more obscure ducks at Blackbrook are among my priorities to get scanned on my current furtle through my old prints - in particular I've got Grey Teal down as a species I photographed there, whereas ZTL only notes the previously-conspecific Sunda Teal for Blackbrook, so that could well be a mislabel - I'm hoping I've got an image good enough that I can check for bulbous foreheads. :D

What is an Andean Duck? The Wildfowl Trust used to have both sub-species of Crested Duck, the Patagonian and the Andean.
I have photos somewhere of a male Musk Duck displaying in the aviary at Slimbridge.

Oxyura ferruginea - once regarded as conspecific with O. jamaicensis.

Yep, Andean Duck is O. ferruginea (I work off the IOC list so it's possible this species isn't recognised in other taxonomies).

Musk Duck is one I would particularly love to see, so I'm jealous there - probably second only to Torrent Duck of the remaining species (assuming I'm not allowed to say Pink-headed Duck :D ).

Musk Duck and Torrent Duck are both safely on my wild list; Blue Duck and Freckled Duck are probably top of those which I most want to add to that list.

I'm on 47 species in the wild.

Looking at the full Anatidae list I think there are only about 15-ish additional species I have seen captive, so I'd be on about 65 species total. There might be more if I went through all my lists and photos, but these are the captive-only ones I remember right now:

Red-breasted Goose
Chinese Goose (if that counts)
Nene
Knob-billed Goose
Egyptian Goose
Blue-winged Goose
Black-bellied Whistling Duck
White-faced Whistling Duck
Radjah Shelduck
Carolina Wood Duck
African Pigmy Goose
Green Pigmy Goose
Muscovy Duck (domestic)
Auckland Island Teal
Campbell Island Teal

Interesting - Anatidae are unusual as a large group of animals where almost all species are regularly bred in human care in Europe. Within the last 20 years or so, at least four missing species were imported and are now relatively regular in Europe: Spectacled Eider, caly-sided Merganser, Meller's Duck, Bernier's Tral,.

There are now only a handful exceptions:
Masked Duck
Andean Duck
Blue-billed Duck
Musk Duck
Brazilian Merganser
Blue Duck
Steller's Eider
Torrent Duck
Madagascar Pochard
Hardhead
White-headed Steamerduck
Falkland Steamerduck
Salvadori's Teal
Mexican Duck
Andaman Teal
Brown Teal
Auckland Teal
Campbell Teal
Southern Pintail
Andean Teal
(plus Crested Shelduck and Pink-headed Duck, which are almost certainly extinct).

2- Mallard duck and Canadian goose :D

I just started counting in 2021 and haven't been to any zoos yet since I started keeping track. I've undoubtedly seen more, but for the sake of consistency all of my lists only go back to January 1st
My list has expanded despite not leaving my county, and my county doesn't have any bodies of water much larger than a pond. My list is now 6, but once I visiting zoos again (namely the St. Louis zoo) it can probably go up higher.

Canada Goose (Branta canadensis)
Greater White-Fronted Goose (Anser albifrons)

Mallard Duck (Anas platyrhynchos)
Wood Duck (Aix sponsa)
Northern Shoveler Duck (Spatula clypeata)
Blue-Winged Teal (Anas discors)
