I count zoos if (a) they are open to the public on a regular basis, (b) they advertise non-domestic animals as part of the experience and (c) it is a permanent collection, eg not a circus moving around or an animal dealer moving animals through.. Thus a tropical fish tank in a dentists office is not a zoo, because it is not part of the experience they advertise. I have included the Blanco Museum, for instance, because they advertise as a bird park as part of the attraction. Actually is is quite an interesting collection if housed in appalling conditions.

Well, as it happens I know how old both of you are. But, I have also forgotten how old both of you are. That's one of the downfalls of being old.

For what it's worth, I think you are both about the same age. More or less.

I count places advertised as farm parks if they have non-domestic species as well, even if only common species (fallow deer, meerkats, wallabies, etc).

To be fair that's pretty solid logic and, to be honest, I've never had to wrestle with whether I should or should not include farm parks on my own list because I've never visited one. This is maybe my loss, who knows, but I just can't get excited about seeing domestics and a few usually (very) common "exotics" -I'd rather do a "proper zoo". Paradoxically, I have enjoyed the more exotic domestics when I come across them in a zoo environment (Berlin Tierpark being the obvious one coming to mind) and I do enjoy a goat feed -who doesn't?

That said I'm intrigued by.....

If they exclusively display domestic forms I wouldn't count them; though there are certainly some borderline cases.

Like where, are there some domestic that are so exotic they can tip the scales?

The other thing that certainly wouldn't count is anywhere whose primary purpose is sale of animals, even if in some cases they are more interesting than the nearest 'zoo' equivalent (Wharf Aquatics vs Matlock Bath Aquarium, for example!).

Again, pretty clear logic and a nice reminder I'm overdue a run to Wharf.

Around eleven I think. Not really travelled very far afield to visit zoos. Usually I visit zoos when I go on holiday and they're in the area.

I'm not a massive one for farm parks but I've been to Hoo Farm (when it wasn't so laden with exotics as now) and Rays when youngers and I recently went to be my local one for the first time (Matlock again!) as a group outing with some friends. That one had a palm civet alongside the wallabies, deer etc so was always going to make the list!

That said I'm intrigued by.....

I was more thinking the other way - species that are sort-of exotic but perhaps too widely kept as pets (degus etc) - or places that literally have one or two non-domestics so they are vastly outnumbered.

Matlock Bath is a spa town just outside Matlock - so it's 'Matlock-where-the-Baths-are' as it were.

Despite having an aquarium, its perhaps more notable in zoo terms for being the town Chester Zoo got its first bears from (where they'd been kept in a barred grotto in the Lovers' Walk park).

Still under 30 for me, but I only really started properly in 2015 and I also had to take a huge break last year due to buying my house.

I'm in similar camp, had visited probably 10-15 before last year but now visit full time and up to about 45-50.

Although I sold my house 2 years ago to fund doing so and now rent a small place.

Couple new ones planned this week, before a weekend in Scotland again next week with Five Sisters on the 9th, Edinburgh on the 10th and West Hebrides Whale and Dolphin watching on the 11th.

Visiting full time sounds like a dream come true for me. Unfortunately I doubt it will ever be a realistic possibility in my case.
